Nearly 1,500 candidate lists have been approved for the early legislative elections of June 12 in Algeria, the Independent National Election Authority (Anie) announced on Monday May 10.

According to Mohamed Chorfi, president of the Anie, 837 independent lists and 646 lists of political parties on the whole of 1,483 lists were accepted "

without reservation

" to take part in this next election.

The total number of candidate lists reached "

2490 including 1237 party lists and 1253 independent lists

," said Mohamed Chorfi, quoted by the official APS press agency.

About 1,200 candidate lists were rejected under the provisions of a new electoral law stipulating that the candidate must not be "

known in a notorious manner for having had links with dubious money and the business community

".

The election campaign will start on May 17

This law fixes in particular the rules of financing and control of the electoral campaigns. Thus, it is forbidden for any candidate to receive donations in cash or in kind from a foreign state or from a natural or legal person of foreign nationality. Among the rejected candidacies is that of Abu El Fadhl Baadji, secretary general of the National Liberation Front (FLN) of ousted former President Abdelaziz Bouteflika, who is accused of not having completed his military service. The electoral campaign for this poll is due to start on May 17.

In February, President Abdelmadjid Tebboune dissolved the AFN and called early legislative elections, an attempt to regain control in the face of the return of the Hirak, the anti-regime protest movement, after a year of suspension due to the Covid-19 pandemic . Since the announcement of this election, the Hirak demonstrators have marched every week in Algiers and in many large cities of the country against the "

roadmap of the regime

" which decided to organize these early legislative elections without taking into account the demands of this protest movement.
