With Michel Fourniret, who died Monday afternoon at the age of 79, the most worrying of post-war criminals disappears.
It will probably never be known for sure how many victims, mostly very young women, perished at his hand.
Suffering from heart problems and Alzheimer's disease, he was hospitalized on April 28 at Pitié-Salpêtrière, revealed the Paris public prosecutor.
The doctors had judged that his condition was hopeless and that he could not be resuscitated.
An autopsy will be performed to establish the exact cause of death.
