The Mulliez group has decided to relocate part of its production of denim pants in France.

The factory, called "

Fashion Cube Denim Center

", will open its doors at the end of 2021 in Neuville-en-Ferrain in the north of France.

As a result, more than 100 jobs are planned.

This investment of 3.5 million euros, including 0.8 million euros in subsidies from the Hauts-de-France region and the European metropolis of Lille, includes a factory from which 410,000 jeans will be produced per year. here in 2024, as well as the place of design and development of denim products for the six brands of the group, (Jules, Pimkie, Bizbee, Grain de Malice, Orsay and RougeGorge Lingerie). Together, these brands account for 1.5 billion euros in turnover, 40% of which is international and employ 9,000 people, in 2,300 stores,

For the moment, the manufacturing is done entirely in Asia, Turkey and the Maghreb.

It is delegated to subcontractors "

we do not take charge of the design

" points out Christian Kinnen, FashionCube Denim Center project manager, this factory is therefore a novelty in two aspects, which explains why production in Neuville -en-Ferrain is relatively modest: "

400,000 jeans represent a little less than 6% of our sales of pants that we make in a full year,

clarifies the manager, who immediately adds,

we have the capacity to do much more, when that will be of success, things will change

”.

Affordable prices

With an equivalent model, those that will leave the northern site will be sold "

about 20% more expensive

" specifies Christian Kinnen, stressing that they will be the subject of "

valuation work at the point of sale, with potential customers

". "

We consider that this Denim center is a demonstrator that producing in France, at an affordable price (40 to 60 euros for jeans) is possible,

" he continues.

“The

entire manufacturing process will be (...) optimized to limit its environmental footprint.

The plant will operate in a short circuit

"and will use"

40 times less water during washing

", according to a press release from FashionCube.

"

As for the treatment of the parts, it will be

" for the most part "

carried out with ozone and laser to bypass conventional polluting techniques in the manufacture of denim clothing

".

The project aims to use all the knowledge available on the design of jeans: “

we, as brands, have lost this know-how

” recognizes the project manager. But the Covid crisis has seen a proliferation of mask-making workshops in the region, which tends to demonstrate that skills are still there and the group intends to make an effort in training.
