The San José de Pereira University Hospital reported this Monday that student leader Lucas Villa, 37, was diagnosed with brain death.
Villa was admitted to the Pereira university hospital on May 5 after receiving eight bullet wounds from unknown persons while peacefully demonstrating against the government of Iván Duque, in the Viaduct of Pereira, capital of Risaralda, department in the center of Colombia.
"We regret to report that despite the specialized care provided in our Intensive Care Unit, the patient did not present any neurological response after suspending sedation and the imaging study is consistent with global cerebral ischemia," the statement said.
"This is how the patient, due to his clinical condition, is diagnosed with brain death," adds the statement, which sends feelings of solidarity to the family and people close to him.

The authorities offered a reward of up to 100 million pesos (about $ 26,600) for information leading to the capture of those responsible for these events.
Villa is one of the three protesters who were shot at by unknown persons this Wednesday in Pereira.
On the night of Wednesday May 5, when the country completed a week of demonstrations against the government of Iván Duque, Villa was in the Pereira Viaduct in a peaceful concentration.
Videos posted on social media that night show the tragedy: unknown individuals shoot eight times from the darkness and three students are seriously injured.
"I was participating in a peaceful sit-in last night on the viaduct and without a word a private car approached and attacked the humanity of my nephew and the people who were there," Martha told Caracol Radio Viviana de las Salas, Villa's aunt.

Another video from the scene shows two men lying wounded by gunshots on the floor after the shooting.
One of them is Lucas Villa Vásquez, the same one who a few hours ago was dancing and protesting peacefully.
