Abel Murrieta, candidate for mayor of Sonora, Mexico, dies in attack

In Mexico, Cajeme's mayoral candidate, Abel Murrieta, died this Thursday after suffering an attack against him, according to the Sonora Prosecutor's Office.

"The Sonora Prosecutor's Office carries out an operation to find those responsible for the cowardly attack in which Abel Murrieta Gutiérrez, former Attorney General of Sonora, was deprived of his life," wrote the Prosecutor's Office on Twitter.

The governor of Sonora, Claudia Pavlovich, regretted the fact.

"I express my strongest condemnation of the attack that took the life of candidate Abel Murrieta, I report that we are working in collaboration with the Attorney General's Office of the State to find those responsible," he wrote on Twitter.

At the moment, more details related to the incident are unknown.

Murrieta, who was the state attorney for the state of Sonora between 2004 and 2012, was also a representative of the LeBarón family in the case of the murder of 9 members of that family in Bavispe, Sonora, in November 2019.
