Corona pandemic: WHO chief calls for vaccine for poorer countries instead of children

In June, older children in Germany could already be vaccinated against Corona. In contrast, many poorer countries hardly have any vaccine available. Now the WHO appeals to the industrialized countries to reconsider their plans.

The vaccine campaign in Germany is making headway.

A good every third person in the country has already received an initial vaccination.

In many poorer countries, however, hardly any vaccine has yet arrived.

The World Health Organization (WHO) has therefore appealed to rich nations to donate corona vaccine to poorer countries instead of vaccinating children with it now.

Currently, only 0.3 percent of the global supply of vaccines is available to poorer countries, said WHO Director General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus in Geneva on Friday.

In many countries, not even medical staff and nurses are protected against Covid-19.

“I understand why some countries want to vaccinate their children and adolescents.

But at this point I urge you to reconsider this, ”Tedros said.

The cans should better be made available to the Covax initiative.

The project, in which the WHO is playing a leading role, aims at a fair global distribution of vaccines.

Federal Family Minister Franziska Giffey (SPD) spoke out on Friday in favor of giving children and adolescents a vaccination offer as a priority as soon as the vaccine is approved for this group.

In the USA and Canada, Biontech's product is already approved for ages twelve and up.
