(CNN) -
Researchers are currently working on the best way to scale vaccination against covid-19 to minors.
But elementary school children are not likely to be vaccinated until the end of the year, the director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, Dr. Anthony Fauci, told MSNBC on Friday.
"They're called age reduction studies, and you have kids in different age groups and you do a test to make sure it's safe," he said.
"You go from 12 to 9 years, if it looks good, then you go from 9 to 6 years, that looks good, 6 to 2 years, that looks good, and that from 6 months to 2 years."
Americans as young as 12 could get the Covid-19 vaccine this week.
Some experts believe this could reverse the pandemic
That timeline probably puts younger kids at the end of the line, Fauci said.

"I think high school kids, teenagers for sure, will be able to get vaccinated when we get to fall, but I think it will take until the end of the calendar year to get to primary school," Fauci said.
