It was clear that the disposal of the contaminated material in the Kühnhauser Weiher would cost the community of Kranzberg a lot.

But this amount was a shock.

Kranzberg

- After the nasty surprise with the contaminated material in the floor of the Kühnhauser Weiher (we reported) the Kranzberg municipal council had to swallow the bitter pill.

At the meeting on Tuesday, 195,000 euros were approved for the disposal of the material previously extracted from the underground - combined with the hope that the worst is over.

During the renovation of the Kühnhauser Weiher, a total of 120,000 euros was earmarked for the disposal of the excavated material. Now about a third of the earth has been dredged and the municipal council had to approve the 195,000 euros for the previous amount. Mayor Hermann Hammerl explained that the excavation could not be carried out in one package: “The collection of the most varied of materials means that we cannot get it away that way.” The municipal councils were shown pictures - with plastic, tractor tires, metal barrels and tons of rubble . The various types of waste were sorted into various piles on site, and this is the only way to hand them over to the disposal companies separately in different classes.

Mayor Hermann Hammerl made it clear that this excavation, reminiscent of a small garbage dump, was not to be expected after the test drilling.

"We are now disposing of the environmental sins of the last 50 years," said Hammerl and reiterated that no one in Kühnhausen can say where the various types of waste come from.

One resident only remembered how he watched as a boy approaching trucks for backfilling.

But that was it with the contemporary witnesses in the small town.

Kranzberg municipality hopes that no more bad news will follow

Currently, a third of the excavation has been completed and it is not possible to estimate which waste is still being extracted. Hammerl hopes that the old soil will now be dredged in the deeper layers and that no new bad news will follow. Nobody can currently predict which costs will be incurred for the excavation. In the budget of the municipality of Kranzberg, 1.04 million euros have been set for the Kühnhauser Weiher - and the project is currently around one million euros.

Renewing the pond will definitely be expensive, but no predictions can be made.

Mayor Hermann Hammerl and building authority manager Manfred Thurner advertised that the planning should continue.

The Office for Rural Development is subsidizing the project with 69 percent, and this funding would be at risk if the plan were changed.

Hammerl pointed out that the 1000 cubic meters volume in the pond for flood protection is a basic condition of the grant.

“We can't leave the rubble in the pond,” said Martin Oberprieler.

Petra Horneber also made it clear that “we have to go through this now”.

For the local council it is a consolation that the 69 percent subsidy is paid for the additional costs now incurred for disposal.
