The American “Great River”, which crosses or runs along ten states, from Minneapolis to the Gulf of Mexico via Memphis and Saint-Louis, is blocked.
A routine check on Thursday uncovered a huge crack in a metal beam that supports a bridge built 48 years ago near Memphis, joining Tennessee and Arkansas.

Immediately, passage over and under the bridge was prohibited.
This has resulted in the blocking of more than 770 boats, or about fifty ships and their loaded barges, noted a spokesperson for the coast guard on Friday morning.

Almost all barges loaded with soybeans, corn or other agricultural products along the rivers of the upper Mississippi, Ohio, Illinois or Missouri are destined for export facilities in the Gulf of Mexico near New Orleans.
They must therefore pass under this bridge
”, immediately worried Mike Steenhoek, director of the professional association of transporters.
