The keys to understanding the triumph of the Madrid right

2021-05-14T06:22:09.106Z

DECRYPTION - Carried by an uninhibited candidate, opponent of strict confinement, the Popular Party crushed the elections in Madrid.

1. Isabel, Queen of Castile

On March 10, by dissolving the regional assembly and calling for early elections, Isabel Díaz Ayuso, 42, president of the Community of Madrid and elected from the Popular Party (PP), tried a game of poker.

At the time, she wanted to counter a motion of censure filed by her opposition and supported by her liberal partner Ciudadanos.

They accused him of a lax health policy - bars and restaurants remained open - and frontally hostile to that of the central government of socialist Pedro Sánchez.

The bet turned into a triumph.

Not only for her but for her political formation, the PP, living an unexpected rebirth.

With 44.7% of the vote, or double that of 2019, Isabel Díaz Ayuso and her troops crushed the ballot.

They pushed Ciudadanos by the wayside (3.5%) and limited the far-right Vox party to 9.2% (+ 0.2% compared to 2019).

The latter has announced his support for the outgoing, but she will not need it to govern.
