Vaccination for everyone over 18: very high demand but still few niches

2021-05-14T21:32:35.174Z

The opening of vaccination to the youngest French people without a cause of comorbidity on Tuesday 11 May created an influx of requests, out of all proportion to the number of places available.

The waiters got hot.

Since Tuesday, May 11, French people between the ages of 18 and 50 can make an appointment at the last minute to be vaccinated even if they have no causes of comorbidities.

As a result, 23 million additional people are eligible.

And they are millions to have logged on to the different sites to hope to obtain the precious sesame: an appointment for a first dose.

The risk of overheating in the face of an influx of demands

We had a peak of 8.6 million users on our site on Tuesday at the time of the announcement,

” explains Stanislas Niox-Château, the boss of Doctolib, the French unicorn for making appointments online.

43,000 slots were allocated to newcomers for Tuesday and Wednesday.

On this weekend, Doctolib allocates around 20,000 appointments every day.

A figure without commensurate with the demand, limited by the capacities of vaccination.

In total, the medical booking site assigned 500,000 appointments on Tuesday.

Still, the overall figure of French people aged 18 to 50 without co-morbidity having made an appointment is difficult to really apprehend.

Because some of them are not limited to obtaining last-minute slots and cheat when making an appointment, noting a co-morbidity or an age over 50 years to register.

The enthusiasm is also carried by Guillaume Rozier, a computer engineer who has multiplied initiatives since the start of the crisis to help control the epidemic. After launching during the first containment CovidTracker, which has become a benchmark in terms of epidemic monitoring data, the 30-something created the ViteMaDose site, which strives to reference the vaccination capacities of the centers, to allocate the niches that have not found a taker. ViteMaDose analyzes in particular the appointments available on sites such as Doctolib and its competitors, by sending multiple requests to “scan” these sites. A “Chronodose” tab was added to the site at the start of the week to allow the new authorized public to find a vaccine.

Except that the influx of visitors caused the overheating.

And the risk was that of an outright disconnection from its site with Doctolib.

It was therefore necessary to create a system for filtering requests.

As a result, there is now a little time lag between the information on the ViteMaDose site, compared to that on the Doctolib site.

Guillaume Rozier and the company ensure exchange to maintain the functioning of their mutual sites, which feed each other.

While waiting for the doses

Covidliste could take advantage of this saturation of demand, while the number of places to be allocated for 18-50 year olds without a cause of comorbidity remains low. Managed by volunteers, the site has been committed since the start of the crisis to allocate the remaining doses to the volunteers at the vaccination sites at the end of the day. The site was very popular at the start of the week. "

We had 30,000 registered on Tuesday: this is the best performance for a fortnight but it is not exceptional either

", explains the communication from Covidliste.

The volunteers think that the shock could come in a second time, while the influx will not be absorbed by the appointment booking. “

We can expect that those who will be tired of not finding an appointment will come to Covidliste,

continues the communication

. They will just have to wait for the email notification.

The site has enabled more than 200,000 French people to find a dose. But they remain to this day more than a million to wait on the famous list.

So if the various actors mobilize for an allocation of the best available doses, it will surely be necessary to patiently deal with the problems for the youngest French people. Vaccination will be open to everyone without restriction from June 15. At the beginning of February, Emmanuel Macron pledged to vaccinate "

all French people who wish

(...)

before the end of the summer.
