(CNN) -
US President Joe Biden has reversed a Trump administration decree that required visa applicants to have health insurance or the means to pay for health care.
“My administration is committed to expanding access to quality, affordable health care.
However, we can achieve that goal without prohibiting the entry of non-citizens who seek to immigrate legally to this country but who lack significant financial means or have not purchased health insurance coverage from a restrictive list of qualified plans, ”says Biden's proclamation. .
Trump's order, which was issued in late 2019 and never went into effect, was faced with immediate legal challenges from advocates and activists who argued that it would bar thousands of immigrants from entering the United States.
The rollback is the latest in a series of moves by the Biden administration to undo Trump-era policies that restricted immigration to the United States.
The Department of Homeland Security has also stopped implementing the Trump-era changes to the "public charge" rule that made it difficult for immigrants to obtain legal status if they used certain public benefits, such as Medicaid, food stamps, and housing vouchers.
