Union faction leader Ralph Brinkhaus (CDU) has made it clear that he wants to keep his post in the next legislature.
"I would like to remain chairman of the parliamentary group," he told the Rheinische Post.
He rejected rumors that Federal Health Minister Jens Spahn (CDU) could move to the head of the Union faction.
He was number two in the race for the CDU chairmanship with the eventual winner Armin Laschet.
"First, the parliamentary group chairman is elected by the parliamentary group," Brinkhaus said of the speculation.
“And secondly, according to my information, Armin Laschet has so far made only one personal decision: namely that he would like to become the next Federal Chancellor.
And I support that. "
Laschet has announced that he does not want to set up a shadow cabinet.
So far, he has only made it clear that he wants to bring the economic expert Friedrich Merz into his election campaign team.
Brinkhaus said that the "conscious sign" for Merz was important because the competition between Lascht and Merz had "kept the party in suspense" for a long time.
"That Friedrich Merz is now joining the ranks, acknowledging that he is a member of the Laschet team and doing everything to ensure that Armin Laschet becomes Chancellor, is a good signal."
