If you live in a house or apartment that has a security room you probably feel lucky on days like this. At the sound of the alarms you should not go out to the stairwell or run down to the shelter. You can live your life knowing when needed - the protected space closest to you is the closest - Right inside the

house. It's an amazing privilege, and even more amazing is that there are people who take it for granted and underestimate it by making changes and renovations to the security room that come at the expense of its safety.

MMAD are acronyms for an apartment protected space, and its construction standards are uniform and contain criteria such as the minimum size of the room, the materials from which it must be built (reinforced concrete), which door should be installed in it and sealing and filtration systems. MMADs also appear on the Home Front Command's website, as well as its permitted and prohibited uses (MMADs cannot be, for example, a kitchen or a shower).

Common changes that people make to their dimensions include: removing the heavy safety door and storing it in a warehouse and replacing it with a decorative door, gluing another flooring over the existing flooring (parquet) which requires shortening the safety door so you can close and seal the protected space, installing bars on the windows , Turning the storage room into a warehouse, replacing lighting fixtures and more.

We asked to talk to some experts to understand which of these changes are allowed and which are simply endangering our lives.

Removing it is the most dangerous thing you can do.

"It is allowed to use the MMAD on a daily basis and that is fine - as long as it does not harm the protection", Dr. Bnei Brosh (Photo: The Israeli Standards Institute)

"The protected space was originally intended for dual-use use," reassures Dr. Bnei Brosh, a former chief defense engineer at the Home Front Command and now director of the building department at the Israeli Standards Institute and a lecturer in the Faculty of Engineering at Ariel University. Impairs protection - also do something that suits everyday needs. It's not allowed, you just have to be careful to do it right.

"" There are situations where people prefer aesthetics over safety, and what happens is that they take out a security door and say 'we will return it if necessary'. And what we see now is that we live in very reality. "Explosive and dynamic, and it's not always even something you can prepare for. It can happen in an instant," says Tzur.

This is exactly what happened to Shira and Ohad (full names are kept in the system) from Ness Ziona.

They removed the security door in their apartment, which serves as the bedroom of one of their little girls, and put it in their warehouse. "On the first night of the big attack on Gush Dan - we had to move the girls to the security room at night, we lay on the floor without a door "From the outside, it was very stressful. We did not keep an eye on ourselves all night because we did not feel that we were leaving the girls in a safe place," says Shira.

"The next morning we were looking for a licensed door installer who would come quickly and assemble the door for us. It must be noted that with a door to the emergency room you feel much safer and can hardly hear the outside voices - the girls could sleep during the alarms without waking up, and even its slamming is relatively quiet," she adds. .

Do not compromise on safety.

The worst thing people can do in a MMAD

"Some people take out the security door and put it in a warehouse - it could be a death trap for people," Eran Sib (Photo: Yanai Ditch)

"The worst thing people can do is take out the door of the security room and put a decorative door in its place," says Eran Sib, chairman of the Association of Renovation Contractors in Israel. "The security door is made of hard steel and is designed to withstand impact and shards. If you take it out and put it in a warehouse it could be a death trap for people. "A decorative door is not as durable as the original door," he says.

All the experts we spoke to are aware of the daily needs and constraints of tenants, and agree that the security room can be used as long as you do not compromise on safety. "The security room can be used as a bedroom or a room with a different purpose, but must be usable and prepared for emergency use. Time, because it is impossible to know when and how things will start to escalate, "says Tzur.

"Care must be taken not to block its openings with anything, not even cabinets. The walls of the security room have ventilation openings - especially in the newer ones, which the updated standard requires to be built with a ventilation and filter sketch.

If parquet is glued to the existing flooring and the door cannot be closed, a new shortened door must be ordered from an authorized manufacturer.

Without shortcuts and improvisations on the existing situation.

"And I always recommend to my clients to install emergency lighting both inside the security room and in the hallway that leads to it," she says.

But sometimes homeowners insist on more far-reaching changes.

"Our directive to contractors is not to make these changes that are detrimental to safety, but to the extent that customers insist, our recommendation is to inform the customer and have him sign that he is doing so at his own risk," says Sib.

It is never possible to know when and how quickly things will escalate.

So what is allowed and what is not allowed to be done in the MMAD?

In a conversation with Dr. Brosh, he stressed that the greatest importance is to maintain the opacity of the space and its safety components - that is, the walls, the door and the steel window and also, to make sure that there are no objects in it that could pose a danger to the MMAD.

- The

space should be sealed.

Any hole drilled in the walls for the purpose of air conditioning, cable, wireless internet or anything else, may damage the sealing of the room and reduce the cross-sectional thickness of the walls. Therefore, such things should be done with the help of licensed professionals.

-

Changes doors

-

are allowed to add an internal door.

The new standard for emergency rooms in Israel also requires installation space for another door, because the daily need for a room to have a functional door is recognized. Installation of another door must be done in a standard manner and without compromising the safety door or its ability to close and lock (usually by turning or tilting). In addition, make sure that the extra door is well installed so that it does not fly over the shelters in the case of the top.

- Windows

- Glasses must not be replaced in the windows of a security room because the installed glass is layered glass which in case it shatters keeps the shelters safe. Replacing the window may impair safety. Please note: Some of the newer rooms (about the last five years) have windows that need to be lowered in an emergency. If you have such a window, there should be a clear instruction on how to remove it in an emergency.

- It

is allowed to install bars in the window, but only those with Internal lock that can be opened in case of rescue.

In addition, Dr. Brosh recommends keeping the key to the bars inside the security room and making sure everyone knows where to find it if necessary.

- It

is advisable not to hang shelves with large

items in the storage

room

. If you have to hang a shelf, it is better to install it on an internal wall and not on an external wall. If heavy objects are placed on the shelf, it is recommended to remove them in case of emergency.

Unstable furniture like tall cabinets, it is also recommended not to stand against an exterior wall or away from the wall in an emergency.
