It has been seven years since violence between Israel and the Palestinians reached such chilling levels. But how did all this come about? Listen to the new episode of Global Challenges.

(CNN Spanish) -

The conflict between Gaza and Israel can have serious consequences throughout the region.

Something that appears to have prompted US President Joe Biden to now put this issue much higher on his agenda.

This occurs when the UN warns that there is a danger of total war.

Listen to the new episode of

Global Challenges

with José Levy.

On both sides we see destruction, deaths - also of children - deep hatred, fear and at the same time, yes, an urgent desire for peace ...

Violence between Israelis and Palestinians had not reached these chilling levels in seven years.

Hundreds and hundreds of Israeli airstrikes directed against the Palestinian Islamist militias of Hamas and Islamic Jihad have reached many locations in northern, central and southern Gaza.

On the other hand, hundreds and hundreds of projectiles have been launched from Gaza against the main Israeli cities.

How much suffering.

But how did all this come about?

The shelling proper began just a few days ago, on Monday, May 10, at 6:02 p.m. local time, when the armed wing of the Hamas movement launched six projectiles from Gaza into an area of Jerusalem.

The surprise was enormous.

Such a bombing was not expected.

For me, in Jerusalem, hearing after years, once again, the wailing of the alarm sirens did not stop being shocking.

In Hamas they assured that they had to demonstrate in this way their solidarity with those Palestinians who for days faced the Israeli security forces in violent disturbances on the Esplanade of the mosques in Jerusalem, with hundreds of wounded.

Of course, without fatalities.

They were protesting the closure of a nearby popular square and, above all, the possible eviction of seven Palestinian families from the Sheikh Jarraj neighborhood, on the eastern side of the city.

For this Islamist movement they had to act and transform themselves, they said from Gaza, into "defenders of Jerusalem."

They described as intolerable that the Israeli security forces had used energetic anti-riot methods in the place where the Prophet Muhammad would have ascended to heaven.

And we are talking about the third most sacred place for Muslims on the face of the Earth and, at the same time, the most sacred for Jews.

Well, for better or for worse, the two biblical temples were also right on that same esplanade.

But that first bombing led to a vigorous Israeli reaction.

His Defense Minister Beni Gantz assured that no sovereign country in the world can allow an organization like Hamas, also considered a terrorist by the United States, to bomb at will and make an entire civilian population hostage.

Then the retaliation began.
