The attack was aimed specifically at underground infrastructure in the Gaza Strip - dubbed the "Hamas Metro".
According to IDF Spokesman Brigadier General Hedi Zilberman, this is a strategic asset in which Hamas has invested years of work and a lot of money. It is one of the largest airstrikes in recent years.
Following the attack, Palestinians reported mass escapes from populated areas in the northern Gaza Strip.
