With the right books, children understand the nature around them better

Anyone who wants to bring their children to enjoy nature and how to treat it considerately should leave the car behind and wander through the woods and meadows with them.
There are great books that can help you with this.
The publishers seem to have slowly realized that the kitschy image of the funny life in the zoo or on the farm is long out of date.
That is why the topic of environmental protection appears in books for all age groups.
Even in the strict equestrian sport, things are now gentler: horse language instead of commands, it is said more and more often in non-fiction books and horse novels.

Many picture books have appeared that draw attention to nature.
I would like to mention quickly: the picture book »Paul's Garden« (Diogenes), a cute story, briefly told and illustrated in a cheerful way, that makes you want to garden.
Deb Pilutti's idea surprised me. She tells how the world has come to be in the picture book »Stone old (and not a bit boring)« (CBJ). An impressively simple story about a stone and what it has seen in its stone-long life. You have to come to that first. What it is like when humans and animals come close to each other, Katja Gehrmann tells in a very funny way in "Stadtbär im Wald" (Moritz).
Traditionally, non-fiction books deal with individual animals or habitats, more and more often it is also about their threat.
The remarkable book »Wölfe« by the animal photographer Axel Gomille was recently published by Kosmos. It provides up-to-date and balanced information about wolves and the relationship between humans and them.
If you want to move gently in nature with simple means, I recommend the pocket book "The Ultimate Survival Guide" (Fischer Sauerländer).
It clearly guides you through all the adversities that you have to solve when camping and hiking.
In any case, it is child's play to put a seed in the ground and see what happens then.
That is why we recommend a garden book and a forest story as well as a hands-on handicraft book and a magical journey of discovery through the moor.

This beautifully colorful picture book has been lying on my shelf for a long time, waiting to be used.
It's a funny story about the somewhat alienated relationship between adults and children and nature.
The successful interplay of text and illustration creates a humorous tension that makes it an outstanding picture book.
What's going on here?
Excellent!
The hedgehog group, led by Ms. Och and Ms. Aha, will spend five days in the forest.
Of course only during the day.
They set off with unsuspecting anticipation.
The forest is full of trees, Leslie knows.
Are there big animals?
The teachers don't really have a clue either.
Funny colored pencil drawings, which you should take a close look at, illustrate the exciting days in nature.
The children do not see large animals, but the readers may.

Always beautifully along the rows: my grandpa showed me how to drill a hole in the earth with my finger, let seeds fall, earth over it.
A small thing that connected me very strongly with nature.
This gardener's book also relates plants to animals and shows how little you need and how much is possible.
What's going on here?
A robust, practical book on environmentally and animal friendly gardening with lots of large photos.
In addition to herbalism, the focus is on growing vegetables and fruits as well as creating natural or recycling gardens.

Many children are concerned about climate change and want to do something about it.
But they cannot help the high traffic, the sea of lights in the cities and sealed front gardens.
When it comes to plastic, on the other hand, everyone can experience their own effectiveness.
There are also a number of do-what books.
I find this one particularly suitable for children.
Because Inka Vigh manages with her cheerful illustrations despite the gloomy situation to approach the topic optimistically.
What's going on here?
With this book you run the risk of the children stepping on us adults properly.
In short texts, the environmental problems related to plastic consumption are explained (oceans, garbage, raw materials and so on) and then possibilities are presented how you could solve them yourself in your everyday life.

Hands up if you are interested in moors! Mine stayed down so far (mosquitoes), but now I see this landscape with different eyes and have great respect for what's going on there. From a human perspective, the moor is rightly threatening, after all, you can get lost or drown. But between mud, ducks and grass there is a fascinating community of plants and animals. (Incidentally, incredibly beautifully described in the novel "The Song of the Crayfish", the children will be able to read that in ten years or so.)
What's going on here?
In this picture book, the biologist and illustrator Eva Sixt describes in an almost narrative way how life in moors arises and passes away.
It tells of the call of the lapwing, the pollination of the sundew and the "pop" of the seed pod when it falls on the ground and spurs out spores.
It describes how humans intervene in this idyll to make peat out of it, but also what measures are now in place to save this important landscape.
