When it comes to traffic management at Karl-Lederer-Platz in Geretsried, emotions boil.

Mayor Michael Müller speaks of "anarchy", residents of "chicane".

Questions and answers about the new rules.

Geretsried - The new parking concept for Karl-Lederer-Platz has been in effect since the beginning of April.

This week the markings were applied.

Parking machines are also still being set up.

The new traffic rules are causing an explosion.

We have picked out a few aspects from the ongoing discussion and asked Mayor Michael Müller for clarification.

Where can you park if the underground car park is too expensive for you?

Some refer to the tariffs in the privately operated underground car park as “Munich prices”.

The first two half hours cost 1 euro each.

After that, € 1.50 per hour is charged.

The shopping tariff (three hours) costs 3 euros.

The maximum daily fee is 10 euros.

Participating dealers will reimburse part of the parking fees.

When asked about alternatives, the town hall chief assures that the city council has dealt “really long and intensively” with the stationary traffic in the “New Center” in order to reconcile the various interests of residents, visitors, customers and employees.

The result is the parking concept, which regulates daily between 8 a.m. and 6 p.m., where parking is free, where chargeable, where temporary and where unlimited parking is possible.

Müller: "Alternatives to the paid underground car park are therefore the free short-term parking spaces in Hermann-Löns-Weg and Martin-Luther-Weg or the large free parking lot on Böhmwiese without any time limit."

Karl-Lederer-Platz in numbers

• According to the city of 221, there are currently free parking spaces above ground in the “Neue Mitte” (Böhmwiese, Egerlandstraße, Fasanenweg, Petruskirche);

• There are 20 short-term parking spaces available (Hermann-Löns-Weg, Martin-Luther-Weg, opposite the town hall);

• There are 56 parking spaces around the town hall, which will be chargeable in the future;

• There are 82 paid parking spaces in the public area of the underground car park;

• The city currently has 379 public parking spaces in the area of Karl-Lederer-Platz.

Mayor: Michael Müller: "In addition - at least for the residents - there are of course the parking spaces that they have on their own property."

• The municipal traffic control monitors stationary traffic on behalf of the city of Geretsried.

A particularly large number of warnings were issued in March, as a comparison of the past months shows: December: 22 warnings;

January: 21 warnings;

February: 20 warnings;

March: 45 warnings;

April (to 29th): 27 warnings.

In this context, Müller emphasizes: "The fact that pedestrians enjoy a certain preference over cars in our New Center was not least the express wish of the citizens." Pedestrian area has been voiced.

“The square should no longer belong to the car, but to the citizens,” said the town hall chief.

Is there a traffic concept?

In a letter to the editor, Günther Fuhrmann, who previously sat on the city council for the FDP, criticized the lack of a transport concept. “That is not the case,” replies Müller. "Of course, all traffic-related aspects were also taken into account in the development of the Neue Mitte and the central garage." The basis for the development on the square is a concept that was developed in 2017 with the support of expert experts and planners and that regulates the flow of traffic on and around the Karl- Lederer-Platz rearranges. "In addition, the city council in 2019 - also with expert support - dedicated itself to the traffic order during the construction phase in Egerlandstrasse," said Müller. The city council unanimously approved the concept."These considerations and decisions are the basis for all further measures with regard to pedestrian and cyclist traffic, car, bus and delivery traffic since then."

Does it make sense for cars to block sidewalks?

Across from the town hall there are short-term parking spaces in accordance with the new parking space concept.

Because parked cars narrowed the sidewalk there, the city made improvements.

Warning beacons now separate the sidewalk and the parking space.

The parking spaces are now also shown.

“It is precisely these situations and examples that show us that not everything is working as we imagine it to be,” said Müller.

Even if the parking concept has been in effect since the beginning of April, some areas still need to be improved.

By the way: there have recently been barriers in front of the future ice cream parlor at the entrance to Martin-Luther-Weg. There, cars repeatedly used the actual sidewalk as a parking space. Andreas Wagner, a member of the Left Bundestag in Geretsried, had already warned about this.

The first warning beacons were set up in the area of the weekly market on Karl-Lederer-Platz. Fuhrmann criticizes that this has disregarded the interests of people with disabilities. "The issue of accessibility was part of the planning from the start and - contrary to interjections to the contrary - was implemented consistently," replied Müller when asked. Rather, the beacons are a direct consequence of the misconduct of individual road users. "If the applicable regulations are deliberately disregarded, we must react compulsorily," said the town hall chief. After all, illegally parked vehicles would obscure the tactile guidance systems. Müller: "It is not the beacons that disregard the needs of people with disabilities, it is rather those who ruthlessly park where they want."

Why were the one-way regulations introduced?

The Martin-Luther-Weg and the Hermann-Löns-Weg have become one-way streets in the course of the center's design and give motorists one or two detours. This regulation is based on the traffic concept and the fact that the Egerlandstrasse is currently not passable, explains Müller. As is well known, new residential and commercial buildings including an underground car park are being built there. Therefore, there are currently only four access options to the square. In addition to the two paths, these are Graslitzer Straße and the B11 driveway. "It is all the more important to keep the currently available and already narrow access options on public land - especially with regard to the passage of emergency and rescue vehicles - as efficient as possible," said the town hall chief. For this purpose, regulations are required for stationary and flowing traffic.

You are also not allowed to drive from the B11 via Karl-Lederer-Platz.

This is also a result of the considerations in September 2019. "It was decided to protect the Hermann-Löns-Weg, which is more demanded as a result, and to avoid turning processes in this narrow and sensitive area."

The corresponding red signs with white lines, which show the driver “No entry”, are often overlooked.

Müller recently described this fact as anarchic.

"Maybe for some it is simply a question of a lack of getting used to," he says.

“Today, Karl-Lederer-Platz is no longer just the traffic area it used to be, where everyone can drive and park as they please.” In order to raise awareness even more, further markings have been added.

In addition, there is a mobile traffic island that clearly shows the illegal entry into the square.

Why is there no underpass for cyclists?

Cyclists coming from the north have to take a detour. The cycle path is interrupted by the intersection with the B11 including the underground car park entrance - much to the annoyance of those affected. There are six lanes in this area, and those who want to cross the road sometimes report "life-threatening" situations. Müller replies: "Unfortunately, it is often forgotten that this access to the central garage is only a temporary solution." With the relocation of the B11 and an expansion of the center towards Böhmwiese, the central garage will also grow in this direction and the access will be relocated accordingly. For this reason alone, a separate underpass for cyclists would not make sense, quite apart from the extremely high costs for such a construction project. "In this respect, it must be our goalto offer a - if not perfect - but still functioning solution for the time until then. "
