Ahead of the meeting of the Political-Security Cabinet, which will convene this morning (Sunday), senior political and professional figures involved in the operation in Gaza say that Israel must begin today to move forward and open ceasefire talks in light of the achievements in fighting so far.

The Political-Security Cabinet is expected to receive mainly updates and reviews on the progress of the operation so far. However, one of the issues that will be on the table will be whether Israel changes its position on the Egyptian proposals to open ceasefire talks or continues the operation and intensifies the attacks.

The defense establishment believes that most of the goals of the air activity have been achieved and that the expansion of the operation means more ground operations in Gaza, something that very few elements in the Israeli government want - if at all. Therefore, senior Israeli officials have said that Israel should change its position and tell Egyptian mediators that if Hamas has a ceasefire proposal - Israel is willing to listen.

A senior Israeli official estimated that today a shift would begin in Israel's position regarding the ceasefire and the end of the operation. He said there was an increase in international pressure, especially from the United States. The Americans did not make an aggressive demand to end the operation, but gently hinted at it in both President Biden's conversation with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Defense Minister Austin's conversation with Defense Minister Benny Gantz.

Ganz met this morning in the Kirya in Tel Aviv with the American envoy to the Middle East, Eddie Amar, to discuss the situation in Gaza and the West Bank. Foreign Minister Gabi Ashkenazi is also expected to meet with Amar today. Senior Israeli officials said the Americans were interested in seeing the opening of ceasefire talks and a gradual end to the operation and a return to calm.

The UN Security Council will also convene today at 5:00 PM Israel time. Foreign Ministry officials estimate that 14 out of 15 council members will call for an end to the operation. The United States is expected to take a more moderate stance but will find it difficult to stand alone with the rest of the international community.

A senior Israeli official also points out that another reason for pursuing an end to the operation and a ceasefire is the deteriorating humanitarian situation in Gaza - the cessation of power plant activity and the almost complete lack of electricity supply in the Gaza Strip, heavy workloads and water shortages.

Chief of Staff Aviv Kochavi will present to the Security Cabinet today a summary of the achievements of Operation Wall Guard, including a top-secret intelligence review of the situation of senior Hamas and Islamic Jihad figures. The IDF is satisfied with a number of areas, most notably the destruction of the Gaza Metro. Its parts. "This is a denial of a strategic and valuable secret capability that Hamas will have a very hard time recovering."

In addition, the IDF is satisfied with the damage to the infrastructure, which will make it very difficult to restore the production lines of rockets and other weapons. "They will do a manpower inventory count and we will find out. They will not be able to hide the number of deaths over time," a security source said. Another dimension is the damage to senior citizens' homes. "Every night a senior manhunt was carried out and where they were unable to reach the senior of his house was destroyed. It is a personal and moral injury to a senior official and when it comes to dozens of homes, it produces a great negative effect. "

These achievements are in addition to damaging infrastructure and launch pits, with an emphasis on about 40 long- and medium-term rocket launchers.

Senior IDF sources said that it would be right to reach a ceasefire in the next two days, but in the opinion of the head of the National Security Council, Meir Ben-Shabbat, the operation should be continued and additional prices charged from Hamas.

"The target bank is still full but under international pressure, the fear of misleading and harming the uninvolved, a difficult action that will harm Israeli soldiers and civilians and the desire to calm Judea and Samaria before it erupts. "We do not yet have a termination mechanism but there are contacts ahead of a mechanism with Egypt, Qatar, Jordan and the Emirates." The source also said that at this stage Israel has not requested a ceasefire but is preparing for the start of contacts soon.

There is controversy in the defense establishment over the achievements of the operation. Sources in the system claim that after the main target basket was attacked, it is difficult to define the situation as a decision, despite the heavy damage the IDF inflicted on Hamas and jihad. "Hamas is not on its knees and is not expected to be soon either."

Defense officials claimed that the IDF was expected to carry out more special operations last week, which would have stunned the organizations in Gaza. Sources praised the United States' side with Israel in the campaign and said that the convening of the UN Security Council without the United States would end in A "warning of condemnation" that would have complicated Israel.
