Vaccinations are one of the most important tools in the fight against the coronavirus.

A study from Italy is now delivering hopeful results.

Rome - In Germany, the third corona wave seems to be subsiding: The number of new infections fell significantly by mid-May.

Since the vaccination campaign in this country is also gaining momentum, many German citizens see light at the end of the tunnel.

According to

Impfdashboard.de

(as of May 14, 2021), 10.9% of the total population in Germany

are now

completely vaccinated against the coronavirus.

More than a third of Germans have already received their first dose of vaccine (36.5%).

This could have a decisive impact on the pandemic events in the coming weeks.

However, one important question is largely open: How much does the first vaccination protect?

Corona vaccination: Study shows positive effect on infection numbers after the first dose

An Italian study has now dealt with the course of the corona infection numbers among vaccinated people. The study participants were people who had received their first of two vaccinations. They had received the vaccines from Pfizer / Biontech, Moderna or AstraZeneca. The survey came to the result that within five weeks of the initial vaccination, the number of infections fell sharply.

"35 days after the first dose there is an 80 percent reduction in infections, a 90 percent reduction in hospital stays and a 95 percent reduction in deaths," announced Italy's National Institute of Health. Together with Italy's Ministry of Health, it collected data from a total of 13.7 million vaccinated people from December 27, 2020 to May 3, 2021. It is the first study by an EU member state on the connection between corona vaccinations and infection rates.

"These data confirm the effectiveness of the vaccination campaign and the need to quickly achieve high coverage across the entire population in order to end the emergency," added Institute President Silvio Brusaferro.

The study results were obtained equally for women and men and for all age groups.

Corona vaccination: No one hundred percent certainty that you will not get sick

A first vaccination with the active ingredients from the manufacturers Biontech / Pfizer, Moderna and AstraZeneca therefore already offers great protection against corona disease. However, there is no such thing as absolute security. According to the Robert Koch Institute, almost 13,000 fully vaccinated people in Germany still tested positive for the corona virus (as of May 14, 2021). With over nine million second vaccinations, this corresponds to around 0.14 percent. According to the Federal Ministry of Health, it was not known in these cases of infection whether the second vaccination had been more than 14 days ago.

Around 44,000 corona infections were also reported among the people who were vaccinated for the first time. In the case of almost 30.4 million first-time vaccinations, this also corresponds to 0.14 percent. This shows that a full corona vaccination usually protects against a severe course. However, it does not exclude this, and vaccinated people can also die. So far (as of May 14, 2021) the authorities have registered 662 deaths in connection with Covid-19 in fully vaccinated people and around 2,000 in single vaccinated people.
