While hiking in the Jachenau / Hirschhörndl / Rappinalm area, a hiker (21) was surprised by the fog on Friday evening.

The mountain rescue service rescued him from rough terrain.

Jachenau / Kochel am See

- On a mountain tour from Jachenau in the direction of Hirschhörndl, a 21-year-old hiker lost his bearings on Friday evening and found himself in impassable terrain.

The mountain rescue services Kochel and Lenggries started a night search and rescue operation under difficult conditions.

As Willi Härtle, head of operations for the Lenggries mountain rescue service, reports, the young man from Germering was surprised by the fog on his tour and thus deviated from his route.

He finally found himself on the north side of the Hirschhörndl with its steep, rocky breaks and didn't know what to do next.

The young man had no cell phone reception.

So he tried to draw attention to himself with loud cries for help.

His luck in misfortune: two hunters happened to be in the area of the Rappinalm, heard the calls for help and made an emergency call.

Looking for hikers in the area of Rappinschlucht and Hirschhörndl

Thereupon the Bergwacht Kochel started the search in the area of the Rappinalm and at 9:20 p.m. also alerted the Bergwacht Lenggries for support.

According to Härtle, this started the search with a team from the entrance to the Rappin Gorge.

A second team made their way to the Hirschhörndlkopf to search the northern slopes from above.

However, the task force in the Rappin Gorge located the missing person relatively quickly and established phone contact.

“That's why our second team also got into the Rappin Gorge,” reports the head of operations.

"Due to the difficult terrain, a mountain rescue helicopter capable of flying at night was also requested," said Härtle.

However, because the helicopter had an approach time of over an hour, the mountain rescue team decided to ascend to the missing person.

"Because of the steep and fragile fall terrain, the ascent had to be secured with ropes," explains Härtle.

"When the crew had almost reached the uninjured, we were informed by the control center that the approach of the rescue helicopter would be delayed by another hour." That is why the decision was made for a ground-based rescue.

Mountain rescue service brings stray hikers to safety on fixed ropes

The mountain rescue service set up fixed ropes, which the 21-year-old was used to bring the 21-year-old safely into the gorge.

From there, the emergency vehicles that brought Germeringer to the mountain rescue station in Lenggries could be reached quickly.

From there the young man started his journey home by taxi.

After the mountain rescuers had cleaned up their equipment, they were home around 3 a.m., according to Härtle.

The search for a ten-year-old boy on Sylvenstein recently kept around 150 emergency services on their toes.

The Lenggries fire brigade moved out these days to rescue a horse that was stuck in a grass grate.
