Can more climate education lead to fewer CO₂ emissions? Education Minister Anja Karliczek sees a connection. It calls for the expansion of educational offers - from kindergarten to adult education.

Federal Education Minister Anja Karliczek (CDU) has called for greater emphasis on education and awareness in the global fight against climate change.

»I am convinced that more climate education will

lead

to fewer CO

emissions

in the long term

.

Better education can also stop global warming, "said Karliczek of the German press agency.

To save the planet, states around the world would have to expand their educational offerings.

That is a task for society as a whole.

"Education for sustainability needs a place in kindergartens and schools, at universities and in vocational training," said Karliczek.

Education about climate-conscious and sustainable behavior must also play a greater role in continuing education and adult education.

The appeal is related to the Unesco world conference, which begins on Monday and is to concentrate on this aspect of the global sustainability goals until Wednesday.

Germany is a "global pioneer" in the goal of broadly anchoring education for sustainable development, said Karliczek.

At the same time, she emphasized: "We have not reached the end either, but will continue to intensify our efforts."

The Unesco program "Education for Sustainable Development: Realizing the Global Sustainable Development Goals" is to be presented at the global online conference next week.

More than 2500 participants from 130 countries, including ministers and representatives from science, business and civil society, have been invited.

Chancellor Angela Merkel and Unesco Director General Audrey Azoulay will open the conference together on Monday.
