Since 2019, MTR has fully applied the Speed and Position Supervision System (iSPS) to monitor train position and speed in real time to ensure safety.
MTR has recently further developed the system, adding the following distance and giving way monitoring functions to the iSPS system, which is now being tested.
The MTR is expected to be officially available on all light rail trains in the third quarter of this year.
The MTR also stated that it is studying the addition of a detection system to the light rail platform. Once a passenger crosses the yellow line or falls on the track by mistake, the iSPS system can also immediately warn the captain.
MTR will fully apply the iSPS system to Light Rail in mid-2019, combining GPS and radio frequency identification (RFID) technology to monitor train position and train speed in real time. Once the train is overspeed, the system will alert you.

MTR train operations director-Western Network Zhang Zhiqiang said that iSPS has been developed to the second generation and is currently testing two new functions, including monitoring the following distance and giving way monitoring functions.
He revealed that the former will calculate the required distance between the front and rear trains according to the actual situation. Once the train is too close, it will issue a "keep a safe distance" reminder.
As for the latter, Zhang pointed out that the train may sometimes need to turn into the same intersection. The system will determine which train will enter the intersection first and remind the captain of the other train to enter the intersection later.
In addition to the iSPS system, Zhang Zhiqiang continued that the MTR is studying a series of measures to improve the safety of pedestrian crossings on the Light Rail. For example, smart lamp posts have been installed at pedestrian crossings at 5 Light Rail stations.
When a train is about to pass, the lamppost will make a "ding ding" sound and broadcast the voice call of "Be careful of passing by the light rail on both sides."
He said that six more smart lampposts will be added during the year.
In addition, MTR buses also introduced a bus fleet monitoring system in 2019, which will warn the bus captain when the speed is approaching the upper limit.

Zhang Zhiqiang said that thanks to the iSPS and various safety measures, the light rail accidents have a clear downward trend. There were 23 accidents in 2019 and only 5 in 2020, and the number of accidents has been declining.
He said that two new features of iSPS are being tested and are expected to be officially launched in the third quarter of this year.
