Members of Espaciocomún15M and neighborhood assemblies talk about the work of the groups in the last 10 years

Ten years after the camping in Puerta del Sol, the spirit of 15-M is still present among neighborhood associations and groups that took over the post since the movement was decentralized. At least a fortnight meets monthly in Madrid. With the coronavirus crisis and political instability, many of the struggles that began a decade ago reappear in the streets. One of these is in Carabanchel. At 1:00 p.m. on a Wednesday in May, Jorge Aranda, an official at the Ramón y Cajal Hospital, meets with some 50 people on a street in the Madrid neighborhood of Opañel. Some are members of the Popular Assembly of Carabanchel 15M. They await the arrival of the judicial commission, which comes to evict a neighbor and her three minor children, to try to prevent the eviction. This is one of the main activities carried out by the group, which was born in the summer of 2011.

The debate on the issues raised in Sol ten years ago is held every month.

EspacioComún15M was born in 2015, on the fourth anniversary of the great demonstration.

In this time it has grouped some 20 collectives and assemblies that arose as a result of the camping and that are still standing.

María Salas is one of the members and founders of this coordinator who regularly meets in the Concepción neighborhood.

“Everything was changing fast.

New associations and movements were being created, and what we wanted was a space to connect with other groups, work in a network ”, explains Salas.

Since then, EspacioComún15M is a neuralgic network that has coordinated the debate of proposals and ideas that try to find solutions to local and national problems.
