After two days of the opening session, Ecuador's new assembly members elected their authorities amid intense negotiations and lobbying between movements and political parties.

With 71 votes in favor, the legislator of the Pachakutik indigenous movement Guadalupe Llori won the Presidency of the Assembly and will lead it for the next two years.

It is the first time that Pachakutik reaches the Presidency of the Legislative Branch and the event is described as a "historic triumph" by the indigenous movement, which is currently the second political force in the Assembly, behind Correismo.

Llori achieved the Presidency of the Assembly thanks to the votes of the Pachakutik movement, the CREO movement, led by President-elect Guillermo Lasso, the Democratic Left movement and other independent movements.

“We must assume that point of balance, that social reconciliation in a divided country such as ours.

The incoming government must have governability for democracy to prevail, "said Llori during his inauguration speech.

The Social Christian Party, led by former Guayaquil mayor Jaime Nebot, and the Unión por la Esperanza Movement, led by former President Rafael Correa, did not support Guadalupe Llori and together they voted for legislator Henry Kronfle, whom they voted as their candidate for the Assembly, but who did not manage to get the necessary votes (70).

The Social Christian Party said in a statement that the CREO movement breached a previous agreement to support Kronfle.

Several CREO legislators spoke out on their Twitter accounts against an agreement of this type with Correísmo.

The legislator Jorge Pinto wrote: “we will not agree with impunity”, while María José Plaza indicated that they remain firm in their “principles of coherence”.

Nathalie Arias insisted that the voters chose them to "leave behind 14 years of damage to the country."

President-elect Guillermo Lasso, who will take office on May 24, congratulated Llori on her election as president of the Assembly.

The new president of the Assembly referred to the support she received from CREO legislators to achieve the Presidency, despite ideological differences.

"Count, Mr. President Guillermo Lasso, that today you have allowed the Pachakutik movement to have the opportunity to preside over the National Assembly, despite the fact that CREO is a right-wing party, but this time they have given us this great opportunity," he emphasized. .

In this Saturday's session, the legislators also elected Virgilio Saquicela from the "Democracia Sí" movement, as first vice president of the Assembly, and Assemblywoman Bella Jiménez, from the Democratic Left, as second vice president.

The new 137 assembly members of Ecuador were elected in the February 7 elections for the 2021-2025 period.

Guillermo Lasso will be inaugurated before this Assembly as President of the Republic on May 24.
