The main result of this agreement between the Republican Left of Catalonia (ERC) and the other major pro-independence formation in the region, Ensemble pour la Catalogne (JxC), will avoid new elections, which would be inevitable if Catalonia did not. not a new president on May 26. ERC and JxC "

reach an agreement in principle to form a coalition government and thus avoid the scenario of new elections,

" said in a joint statement the two formations, which have governed the region since 2015.

The leader of ERC, Pere Aragonés, outgoing vice-president of the Catalan government, should therefore have the necessary votes to be elected president of the region, since the two parties won respectively 33 and 32 seats in the elections of February 14. , to which must be added the nine from the Popular Unity Candidacy (CUP), a small far-left independence party, a total of 74 deputies out of the 135 in the regional parliament.

The statement does not provide details on the content of the agreement, simply stating that it is "

in the process of being finalized

" and that it will be presented at a press conference at 1:30 p.m. local (11:30 a.m.) in Barcelona.

The differences between ERC and JxC had so far prevented the renewal of the government agreement that united the two formations since 2015. The regional government was previously headed by JxC. The main divergence concerns the strategy of the Catalan separatist movement, ERC advocating dialogue with the Spanish left government of Pedro Sánchez, which he supports in the Parliament of Madrid, while JxC refuses negotiation with the central power.

With 7.8 million inhabitants, Catalonia is one of the richest regions in Spain. Independence ideas have gained ground over the past ten years, leading in 2017 to a unilateral proclamation of independence and a serious political crisis, but the population remains divided on this matter. In the February elections, the separatist parties had won a total of some 52% of the vote, a result favored by an exceptionally high abstention.
