Ile-de-France: insurance for scooters and motorcycles much more expensive than elsewhere

2021-05-19T13:52:09.965Z

According to a study by the comparator LesFurets.com, Ile-de-France residents pay on average 200 euros more per year than other French people to insure

For their detractors, motorized two-wheelers are dangerous, noisy and polluting vehicles.

On the other hand, according to their owners, scooters and motorcycles especially combine several advantages for traveling in Ile-de-France: they take up less space than a car and save time by slipping through traffic jams.

This mode of travel nevertheless has a significantly higher insurance cost in Ile-de-France than elsewhere.

744 euros per year on average

According to a study carried out by the insurance comparator Lesfurets.com, with 744 euros per year on average, the Ile-de-France region is at the top of the ranking of the most expensive territories for motorcycle owners. With regard to comprehensive insurance, "the national average is 562 euros in 2021, a difference of nearly 200 euros with Ile-de-France," said Rami Karam, general manager of the site Les Furets.

The comparator has examined more than 500,000 motorcycle and scooter insurance quotes requested online between March 2020 and March 2021. Result: in the ranking of the most expensive departments, the first five places are occupied by Ile-de-France.

Driving a large engine will cost you 839 euros per year in Hauts-de-Seine, 800 euros in Val-de-Marne or 793 euros in Seine-Saint-Denis.

Far from the 388 euros requested by companies if you are registered in Ardèche!

For scooters, the score is a little less heavy.

The national average is 457 euros per year, to which must be added several tens of euros in the Paris region, depending on the age of the pilot.

These steep prices can be explained by several factors.

“Basically, the level of premiums is set by insurers according to the risk of loss, the profile of the driver, the place of parking, the mileage and the engine capacity,” recalls Rami Karam.

First problem: statistics indicate that the share of "bad drivers" is 23% in Ile-de-France, by far the highest national rate.

By way of comparison, the rate of “bad drivers” is only 3% in Bourgogne-Franche Comté.

These pilots who accumulate claims are overwhelmingly men, aged between 18 and 34 years.

The density of traffic in the Paris region, the lack of experience and, sometimes, the recklessness of these pilots fuel a high accident rate.

Along with pedestrians, motorized two-wheeler drivers are the first victims of serious accidents in built-up areas.

Often young, “2WD” users represent more than 40% of those killed and 50% of the injured.

"Based on the kilometers traveled, the risk of being killed is 17 times higher for a moped than for a motorist", underlines Road Safety.

Despite everything, the motorized two-wheeler market is growing

Ile-de-France is also distinguished by an increased risk of vandalism and theft, because vehicles are often parked there in the open air, on public roads. "A secure parking place limits the risks and it is a way of lowering the amount of the insurance premium", underlines Rami Karam. And in general "it is advisable to go around your contracts every two or three years" to lower your bill, he adds.

Lately, motorcycles and scooters are often singled out for the nuisance they generate, by the Ras-le-Scoot collective, in particular. After Vincennes and Charenton (Val-de-Marne), the City of Paris plans to make their parking payable. Despite these constraints, the Ferrets study shows that the market for these vehicles is doing well in France. According to their data, “the number of insurance quotes is up 9% last year. And over the first months of 2021, the increase is 41% ”. In question, undoubtedly: the refusal to take public transport or to suffer traffic jams by car.

This improvement in sales comes as the number of two-wheelers has fallen by more than 25% in 10 years in the Paris region. According to the latest Global Transport Study, 420,000 trips per day are usually made by motorized two-wheelers in Ile-de-France. This is about 2% of total surface trips, and half as much as cycling (840,000 per day, + 30%).
