Oberhausen-Peißenberg: New attempt for an important cycle path

An everyday cycle path connection for schoolchildren and commuters between Oberhausen and Peißenberg has been discussed for years.

In the most recent meeting, Andreas Lenker, Head of Department at the State Building Authority, presented several possible routes to the Oberhausen municipal council.

Oberhausen

- Up to 3.2 million euros could be due for the almost six-kilometer connection.

The Weilheim-Schongau district has developed a network of everyday cycling routes along the district roads so that individual places can be connected quickly and safely for cyclists.

The aim of this concept is to get as many citizens as possible to leave their cars behind and instead ride their bikes.

In 2015, Oberhausen and Peißenberg asked students at the TU Stuttgart to make suggestions.

Now the concrete planning should finally begin and the implementation should take place as soon as possible, said District Administrator Jochner-Weiß.

There have already been positive reactions from the district administration: According to Jochner-Weiß, the Lower Nature Conservation Authority has signaled that a Ammer bridge near the Ach confluence can probably be built without a compatibility test.

However, the water management office has a say and many other questions are still open, as reported by Lenker.

As key data for the first variant, he named a route parallel to the WM 15 district road through Maxlried and Eyach to the bridge in Peißenberg at the WM 15. At the exit of Maxlried, a pedestrian crossing would be possible for a safe crossing.

"This is the most direct and fastest connection with the smallest difference in altitude," says the expert.

This 5.2 kilometer long cycle path would cost around 1.9 million.

The disadvantages, according to Lenker: there would be crossings with motor vehicles and the route along the county road is not very attractive for tourists.

In addition, extensive land acquisition is necessary.

Variant 2 also runs parallel to WM 15, but branches off onto Boxlriedre Weg in Maxlried and crosses the Eyach south of the riding stables;

Then it's 2.3 kilometers on the southern bank of the Ammer to Peißenberg.

The 5.7 kilometer route would cost 1.8 million euros and is therefore the cheapest.

As disadvantages, Lenker named possible conflicts between cyclists and agricultural traffic as well as significant interference in valuable nature conservation areas.

The new cycle path could also be flooded due to the raised bog if it rains heavily.

After one and a half hours of discussion, the Oberhaus councils decided with 13: 1 votes that these two variants should be investigated further.

Deviating alternatives, which were briefly mentioned, were ruled out due to the enormous costs, as well as a gradation from the district to the municipal road.

"Then we would only have the entire road construction load, but not less traffic," said Mayor Thomas Feistl.

According to the decision of the district council, the two communities affected could expect a subsidy from the district of up to 80 percent.

The actual costs for the cycle path have yet to be clarified and will soon be discussed in the Peißenberg municipal council and in the district committees.

Not only the interests of the conservationists could become problematic for the realization, but also the negotiations with up to two dozen property owners.

"It is not easy to find compensation or exchange areas," said Lenker.

In any case, the road construction authority wants to keep the interference in the landscape as low as possible.

These met with criticism in the Oberhausen municipal council: sealing an area totaling 17,000 square meters is no small matter, the discussion said.

Now it will depend on what is politically enforceable in the responsible bodies. Feistl was happy that the District Office is involved as a partner, especially for the financing. The path between the two municipalities would be the first implementation of the everyday cycle path concept unanimously approved by the district council at the end of 2019; the route is considered an important east-west route and is intended to open up a corridor that ensures fast and safe travel.
