The village of Ma'areen Salib in the western countryside of Hama governorate today celebrated the Levantine Rose Harvest Festival (Syrian fragrant for humanity) held by the Ministry of Culture (Directorate of Intangible Heritage) and the Hama Culture Directorate in cooperation with the Syrian Trust for Development and the people of the village.

In a statement to reporters, the Minister of Culture, Dr. Labana Mashouh, stressed the importance of the intangible heritage in the lives of peoples by consolidating the values ​​of citizenship and belonging, which can be invested at the national and global level in promoting tourism and national identity and its cohesion, noting that the Damascene rose is one of the most prominent components of this heritage, after its inclusion on the list of intangible heritage in UNESCO in 2019, with the efforts of the official and civil authorities to prove Syria's right to this product that traveled the world.

Dr. Mashouh considered that the use of the phrase (more precious than gold) for the Damian rose came due to the high price of the aromatic oils resulting from it, noting the importance of continuing to expand in cultivation, manufacturing and marketing of its products in a way that achieves economic feasibility for its farmers and producers and contributes to the national income. This rose is to be the nucleus for the consolidation of its material and moral value in Syria.

The governor of Hama, Eng. Muhammad Tariq Kreshati, talked about the medical, nutritional and aromatic benefits of the Damask Rose product, which represents one of the handicrafts that the governorate supports in cooperation with the Syrian Trust for Development, cultivation, manufacturing and marketing to ensure the benefit of those in charge, especially the families of the martyrs and the wounded.

The farmer, Ahmed Muhammad Al-Ahmad, one of the most famous farmers of the Damask rose in the village, said that he started this cultivation 15 years ago and it is continuously expanding in the village, where the area planted with the Damascene rose is more than 50 dunums and is characterized by high production revenues and a variety of product varieties with the need to establish a modern plant to extract oils He explained that his nursery distributed more than 20 thousand rose seedlings to farmers in the governorates of Hama and Homs, as a contribution to increasing their production in the future.

Roshan Hassan, a farmer of a Damascene rose, explained that the period of harvesting roses is in the early morning between five and nine o'clock in order to preserve the stability of the aromatic substance in the flowers that are separated from the petals to produce flowers, jams, rose water and syrup.

Ma'rin Al-Salib is the first village in the cultivation of the Damascene rose at the level of Hama Governorate, according to Nasr Ahmed farms, as its production is currently being exported on a small scale to many countries, expressing his hope for increased interest and support for the concerned authorities for this cultivation and its expansion and spread.

For her part, Reem Ibrahim, the supervisor of the Shami Rose project at the Syrian Trust for Development, indicated that after the inclusion of this product on the World Heritage List, an integrated work plan was developed in cooperation with partners from government and private agencies to advance this project in terms of supporting farmers in the field of securing equipment, seedlings and land reclamation in cooperation with my ministries Agriculture and tourism and conducting scientific research on the properties of this rose in coordination with colleges of pharmacy and pharmaceutical companies, indicating that the Damascene Rose Festival is usually celebrated in the village of Al-Marah in the countryside of Damascus, but this year the village of Ma'rin Salib was chosen due to the position it has achieved in cultivating the rose, provided that this festival is published In various provinces as a national project that revives this ancient Syrian heritage.

The festival featured traditional singing performed by one of the town’s women in her traditional dress, in addition to the opening of a heritage exhibition of the Al-Ghab Plain, an exhibition of textile works, heritage assets and the manufacture of handicrafts, with a video presentation on the stages of cultivation, care and manufacture of the Damascene rose, and the need to expand its cultivation and economic feasibility.
