Attacks on police officers continued to increase over the past year.

Interior Minister Joachim Herrmann speaks of a worrying trend.

Munich - When Police Superintendent Marc Hoffmann was called to work in a Nuremberg * Spielothek last September, he had no idea that it would be an operation with consequences. Together with a colleague, he met an aggressive, drunk guest who had already gambled away 700 euros and was apparently not very enthusiastic about it. When the police tried to expel him, the man became more and more aggressive and insulted the officers, as Hoffmann reports. The police decided to take the man into police custody. But he resisted - and when he was finally fixed on the floor in a scramble, he bit Marc Hoffmann twice in the forearm. After the mission could be ended with the help of other colleagues, Police Master Hoffmann first went to the clinic.

Such attacks on police officers, but also on rescue workers and fire fighters, have been increasing for years.

And last year too, violence against emergency services reached a new high, as Interior Minister Joachim Herrmann (CSU) reported on Monday (May 17).

The Ministry of the Interior documented 8,587 incidents of violence against police officers - an increase of 7.9 percent over the previous year.

A "worrying increase," as Herrmann said.

More than half of the attacks were carried out with physical violence, 2809 police officers were injured, also an increase of 8.2 percent.

Hardly any football games or folk festivals - but many corona violations

And that, although the situation last year was different than usual. Because there were hardly any football games at which there were violent clashes of fan and hooligan groups with the police. Larger folk festivals did not take place because of the pandemic. For this, the police had to check compliance with the Corona * restrictions. Herrmann has spoken of 3.4 million controls and 165,000 reported violations since the exit restrictions began. According to Herrmann, there were repeated insults, for example during mask controls. And in the lateral thinker demos, participants repeatedly opposed police measures.

For the police union in Bavaria (GdP) the increase is "unbearable".

The state chairman Peter Pytlik called for swift punishment for the perpetrators.

Herrmann referred to an action plan introduced last March, with which serious crimes against police officers should reach the public prosecutor's office more quickly.

Marc Hoffmann's case has already landed in court as a result.

His attacker has now been sentenced to two years and three months' imprisonment.

He had repeatedly resisted the police before and after the incident in December.

Many of the attackers are drunk

Because many attackers are still drunk, the SPD parliamentary group is also calling for a campaign on the influence of alcohol in connection with physical violence for young people.

The fact that the violence is occupying the police again this year was not only shown by the escalated operation in the English Garden a few days ago. Also on this Saturday a police officer was insulted and beaten with fists in Munich - at the subway station of the main train station. The attacker was an 18-year-old man from the Bad Tölz-Wolfratshausen district known to the police. Spicy: He's employed in the security industry. -
