In the last day, there has been a change in the messages that Israel receives from the US administration, which now include clearer statements regarding the need to end the operation in the Gaza Strip. Israeli officials say the Americans have not set a clear deadline for ending the operation and are still expressing public support for Israel's right to self-defense, but in closed talks make it clear to the government in Jerusalem that they want the operation to end in the coming days.

Since the beginning of the operation, the Biden administration has provided broad support to Israel. U.S. sources close to the administration said the directive came from President Biden in person, despite the fact that many of his advisers believed the United States should take a more critical line toward Israel. Under Biden's direction, the United States has three times blocked the publication of a UN Security Council statement calling for a ceasefire since the beginning of the operation.

For more than a week, the White House has almost completely refrained from publicly criticizing Israel or even calling for a ceasefire.

White House spokeswoman Jen Saki explained that the administration believes that conducting quiet diplomatic contacts is more effective than publishing public calls for a ceasefire.

The point from which the trend began to change was the bombing of the building in Gaza where the offices of the world's largest news agency, AP, were located last Saturday. A few hours earlier, two women and eight children were also killed in an airstrike in the northern Gaza Strip. Both of these incidents caused Biden to call Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu for the second time since the start of the operation, but this time the message - at least in the closed conversation - was more critical.

Since Saturday, there has been heavy pressure on the Biden administration - both from European countries and the Arab world - to demand that Israel stop the operation in Gaza. The Biden administration that has engraved on its banner back to cooperation with the countries of the world in international institutions has found itself working almost alone to curb this criticism.

A hint of this came on Monday, when just five minutes before the deadline for blocking the Security Council announcement on the situation in Gaza, the Americans announced that they were opposed to its publication.

Senior Israeli officials believe that this is not a coincidence, but a deliberate signal to Israel by the Biden government that international credit is running out - and that it is worth hurrying up and ending the operation.

The pressure on Biden also came from a house on the part of a growing number of House members and senators from the Democratic Party who sharply attacked Israel. The criticism even came from Senate Foreign Affairs Committee Chairman Robert Menendez who is considered one of Israel's biggest supporters in the Democratic Party. House Foreign Affairs Committee chairman Gregory Mix has announced he will ask Biden to delay an arms deal with Israel due to the operation in Gaza.

The criticism within the Democratic Party was unprecedented in its intensity and reached levels that Israel had never encountered. The leader of the Democratic majority in the Senate, Chuck Schumer - the most senior Jew in Congress and a great supporter of Israel - did not criticize Israel, but also refrained from expressing support for long days. On Monday evening he even told reporters that he wanted to see a ceasefire as soon as possible.

On Monday, in the third phone call between Biden and Netanyahu, as well as in a conversation between Foreign Minister Anthony Blinken and Foreign Minister Gabi Ashkenazi, the American message was that the administration was having difficulty continuing to fend off external and internal pressures, a senior Israeli official said.

The American message was that every passing day erodes even more the backing they can give so one should strive for an end.
