Today, the Japanese Medical Association called for the cancellation of the Tokyo Olympics, in conjunction with the worsening Corona crisis.

"Hospitals are already overburdened and do not have spare capacity at a time when Japan is witnessing a sharp rise in Corona injuries," The Times of Japan newspaper quoted the Tokyo Doctors Association as saying in a statement.

The Association called on Japanese Prime Minister Yoshihide Suga to persuade the International Olympic Committee to take a decision to cancel the Olympiad, given that holding it is difficult.

Cases of infection increased in Japan, which raised concern, amid a shortage of medical staff and hospital beds in some areas of the Japanese capital, prompting the Japanese government to extend the third state of emergency in Tokyo and many other provinces until May 31.

An opinion poll conducted by the Japanese newspaper "Asahi Shinbun" and published yesterday revealed that more than 80 percent of Japanese believe that the Tokyo Olympics and Paralympic Games should be canceled this summer, amid the continued rise in Corona injuries and the slow introduction of vaccines less than three months before the opening of the Olympics.

The Tokyo Olympics is scheduled to open on July 23, taking into account that Tokyo itself is among nine Japanese provinces currently under a state of emergency to combat Corona.

In addition, the local authorities in Tokyo announced today that 732 new cases of the virus have been recorded, including 81 in critical health conditions.
