Local politicians want to do something for cyclists, including offering a connection between Oberau and Ettal.
That's not that easy.
Tarring the old Ettal mountain road seems too dangerous for some district councilors.
Now there is a new idea.

- There is movement in the discussion about a bike connection between Ettal and Oberau. Rolf Walther, the district councilor of the Left from Ohlstadt, had already submitted an application last autumn, which provides for the renovation of the old Ettaler Bergstrasse. Now the topic landed in the district committee for the first time. Chamberlain Franz Nebl took over the word for the administration and quickly made it clear that the authority judged the idea very positively.
"Such a connection would close the gap in the cycle path network," assured Nebl. Nevertheless, there are great challenges. "The topography is very difficult, we have an average gradient of 20 percent and places that are still much steeper." Basically, however, the state building authority in Weilheim is responsible for the renovation of the old mountain road, since it is legally a cycle path alongside the federal road would. Because the B23 in the direction of Oberammergau does not have such a separate cycle section in the Ettaler Berg area. "The sponsorship would therefore lie with the road construction authority," Nebl specified. Initial discussions have even taken place. District supports cycle path for the Ettaler Berg
According to Nebl, the district can and wants to support a cycle path for the Ettaler Berg.
“We could act as a moderator, for example through our mobility management.” In any case, the office would like to send a positive letter to the building authority.
Preferably with the indication that the district council considers this gap in the cycle path network to be necessary.
So far so good.
However, in the course of the mind game, doubts arose about the feasibility of the project on the old Ettaler Berg.
"We have agreed that we should check the old Kienbergweg," noted District Administrator Anton Speer (FW), who came out as an "active cyclist".
A variant that Peter Imminger (CSU) also welcomed with clear words.
Because the mayor of Oberau has strong reservations.
“If we tar the old mountain, then we will have the first helicopter within 14 days.

Legal aspect: Mayor reminds of liability issue
Imminger received support from Elisabeth Koch (CSU).

Tarring the old mountain road is something that Garmisch-Partenkirchen's mayor sees as a resolution.
The Kienberg route, which is currently largely overgrown, used to be a connection for the Fuggers to Augsburg, as CSU parliamentary group spokesman Imminger explained.
"Some of it is still in existence and not nearly as dangerous." The route meanders down the mountain in curves, not just straight ahead.
After a unanimous vote by the committee, the district will bring this route into play at the road construction authority as an alternative to the Altes Ettaler Berg. "If you clear it up and prepare it, that would be a very good solution," summarized Speer.
