Two border crossings with the Gaza Strip were shot at by Palestinian militants on Tuesday after they were temporarily opened.

In the area of Kerem Shalom there was a rocket alarm at noon.

According to the dpa news agency, it is the only transfer of goods to the isolated coastal area.

According to the responsible Israeli Cogat authority, fuel, humanitarian aid and animal feed were temporarily brought into the blocked Palestinian territory via Kerem Schalom on Tuesday.

After the post was bombarded with grenades, however, it was decided to close it again.

Some of the trucks therefore remained outside the Gaza Strip, reported the Israeli media.

At first there was no information on why the border posts from the Palestinian territory were also shot at.

According to the Times of Israel, the supply of goods is extremely important for the Gaza Strip.

Finally, the only power station in the coastal strip threatened to run out of fuel.

Soldier injured at another border post

According to the Israeli army, a soldier was slightly injured in a mortar shell fire near a pedestrian crossing on Kibbutz Erez further north.

According to paramedics, the 19-year-old was taken to hospital.

Raed Fattouh, who is responsible for the coordination of goods transport with Israel on the Palestinian side, announced that Kerem Shalom and Erez should remain open from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. local time.

The entry and exit of foreign representatives should also be made possible via Erez.

For foreign journalists, the transition was closed shortly after the recent escalation began.

Palestinians protest in Ramallah

Thousands of Palestinians have meanwhile demonstrated in Ramallah against Israel's actions in the Gaza Strip.

On one of the protest signs, against a background of blood-red handprints, read: "Bombing children is not self-defense." According to the Gaza Ministry of Health, which is controlled by the radical Islamic Hamas, at least 213 Palestinians have been killed since the beginning of the armed conflict, including 61 children and 36 women.

There is no independent confirmation of the information.

Many of the demonstrators in Ramallah waved Palestinian flags.

Some of the participants then went to an Israeli military lockdown to protest.

However, according to eyewitness reports, they were forced to withdraw using tear gas.

In the wake of the protests, numerous Arab Israelis and Palestinians in the West Bank stopped working on Tuesday.

There had also been calls for a "Day of Wrath" and demonstrations in the West Bank.

Arab doctors and nurses as well as many teachers are apparently excluded from the strike in Israel.
