The Hong Kong Government News website issued a press release on Tuesday (18th) stating that the Hong Kong Economic, Trade and Cultural Office (Taiwan) (Economic, Trade and Cultural Affairs Office) will temporarily suspend operations from now on.

Later, the Constitutional and Mainland Affairs Bureau replied that the decision had nothing to do with the Taiwan epidemic.

The communiqué stated that during the temporary suspension of operations of the Economic, Trade and Cultural Affairs Office, the Hong Kong government will continue to handle general enquiries and cases of Hong Kong residents seeking help in Taiwan through the 1823, 1868 hotlines and the GovHK website, and provide Taiwan citizens with information related to Hong Kong.

Taiwan’s Mainland Affairs Council issued a press release in the afternoon in response, stating that no matter what the reason is, "we will respect it."

However, the MAC also stated that the Hong Kong office in Taiwan was established in accordance with the consensus of Taiwan and Hong Kong in establishing mutual offices in 2011, and has been in operation for many years. "We are very sorry for the unilateral decision of the Hong Kong government."

According to a Taiwanese media "Central News Agency" quoting Hong Kong sources, the Hong Kong office in Taiwan has suspended operations because the supervisor has been vacant and it cannot obtain a Taiwan work visa.

However, the report also quoted a source from Taiwan as saying that after the head of the Hong Kong office in Taiwan returned to Hong Kong after his term ended one or two years ago, the Hong Kong side has never sent a replacement or applied for a relevant work visa from Taiwan.
