Empress Elisabeth already knew how important a second escape route is in the event of a fire.

The stairs that she had built into the Kaiserin Elisabeth Hotel in Feldafing are no longer there.

But a new one.

The fire protection renovation of the hotel is now complete.

Feldafing -

The Hotel Kaiserin Elisabeth in Feldafing has had an escape spiral staircase again since Friday. On the side it runs up to the third floor. The staircase was one of the requirements of the fire protection renovation that hotel manager Erika Borchard had carried out over the past five years. “We have invested 1.5 million euros so far,” she says. The stairs were added just in time for the start of the season. When the guests are allowed to stay the night again from next Saturday, May 21st, the outdoor area and the wonderful terrace of the hotel will also be reopened. The fire protection renovation was time-consuming, expensive and required a lot of discussions, including with the State Office for Monument Protection. The doors in the interior were renewed, the fire alarm system and the ceilings in the corridors.

Hotelier Strauch had the escape stairs for the Empress built. Elisabeth of Austria was terrified of fire - and rightly so, as it turned out in 1897. In May of this year, her sister Sophie was killed in the fire in the “Bazar de la Charité” in Paris. Around 130 people died in this disaster - at this point, however, the Empress was no longer a guest in Feldafing. In 1894 she stayed at the then Hotel Strauch for the last time. In 1898 she was murdered in Geneva.

The hotel has been called Kaiserin Elisabeth since 1900.

In the same year the Kraft-Borchardt family bought the property.

Around this time, Erika Borchardt estimates, Sisi's escape staircase was converted into a normal staircase, the old staircase moved to the Traubingen church.

"Now it is a service staircase so that the staff with the trays for the rooms do not always have to pass the reception," explains the hotel manager.

"A spiral staircase is not suitable for service."

The next renovation will be the enlargement of the restaurant and a separate entrance for the beer parlor.

“We won't start before November,” says Erika Borchardt.

For the first time, you and your employees are looking forward to the guests arriving on Saturday. “We are well booked,” says the boss. “It was the same last year. As soon as you could, everything was full. "
