After a good nine months due to a pandemic, the aviation industry is back on track.

4700 take-offs and landings are planned at Munich Airport during the Whitsun holidays.

Airport - And the Corona situation does not mean that most connections will have to be canceled at short notice, as was the case last at Easter.

130 destinations will be accessible from Erdinger Moos between May 21 and June 6, the FMG announced on Monday. The main focus of the trip is the Mediterranean area. With 368 connections, Spain is at the top, 125 times it goes to Mallorca. Almost all European capitals are now connected to Munich by air, according to FMG.

This means that around 280 take-offs and landings take place on average during the holiday season - around 80 flights more than in the first two weeks of May, according to FMG spokesman Ingo Anspach. But the old days are still a long way off: "The volume of traffic is still far below the level of the years before the Covid 19 pandemic," Anspach calculates. For comparison: During the 2019 Whitsun holidays, with a total of 19,300 take-offs and landings, four times as many flights were registered.

With the start of the holidays, Lufthansa is launching a Greece offensive with twelve destinations. "We have never had so many at this time," reports spokeswoman Bettina Rittberger in an interview with our newspaper. "The booking situation is currently very positive." According to her, the Kranich-Linie has already headed for Athens, Corfu, Santorin and Rhodes. New in the offer are Mykonos, Zakynthos, Kos, Thessaloniki, Preveza and Kavala. Two airports will be served on Crete for the first time: Heraklion and Chania.

"We prepared for the Whitsun traffic early, in winter, and secured the appropriate take-off and landing rights ('slots')." The plan of Germany's largest airline paid off: European travel is possible again in time for the Whitsun holidays. Crews and crews could be made available at short notice, said Rittberger. A large number of pilots and flight attendants are on standby. When it comes to the machines, Lufthansa is guided by the bookings. “We can react at short notice and, depending on the reservations, rely on the aircraft types Airbus A319, A320 and A321. Some of the planes are ready at Moos Airport.

But intercontinental traffic is also preparing for the restart.

According to Anspach, there are again more connections and frequencies to Asia and North America.

It goes non-stop to Singapore several times a week.

There are also scheduled connections to Doha, Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Los Angeles, New York, Washington and Denver.

At the moment, all flights are still handled via Lufthansa Terminal 2.

Anspach announces, however, that "due to the increasing volume of traffic, check-in for around a dozen airlines will take place in area Z and in departure area C of Terminal 1 from May 19".

During the travel season, more shops and restaurants have opened again in the non-public area, Anspach announced.

Mask and distance requirements apply on the entire site.

Due to the requirements, there may be waiting times.

The industry hopes that Whitsun is the starting signal for a real summer vacation.

"People want to travel again," says FMG boss Jost Lammers with conviction.
