Argentina recorded its highest number of new cases of Covid-19 contamination (35,543) and deaths (745) on Tuesday, May 18, in 24 hours since the start of the coronavirus epidemic, authorities said.
In total, Argentina has recorded 3,371,508 cases of Covid-19 and 71,771 deaths, for a population of some 45 million inhabitants.

Argentinian President Alberto Fernandez said in a public ceremony on Tuesday, referring to these record figures. He has promised to speed up the current vaccination program, which has enabled some 8.1 million people to receive at least one dose of the vaccine, and appeals to the
"conscience"
of his compatriots to respect the rules of distancing and avoid travel.
To avoid the collapse of the health system, as the intensive care occupancy rate exceeds 76% in Buenos Aires and 72% in the country, the government has sought to impose further restrictions. He ordered the closure of schools in Buenos Aires last month, but the city authorities refused, obtaining before the Supreme Court the suspension of this measure.
