Secondary school for Gilching: District rejects the mayor's request - for the time being

The district council currently does not want to make any stipulations about a secondary school in Gilching. A request by the SPD to speak out in principle in favor of it, was rejected. That does not mean that the district is not considering another secondary school in the western district - and that one does not become active there oneself.

The district council currently does not want to make any stipulations about a secondary school in Gilching.

A request by the SPD to speak out in principle in favor of it, was rejected.

That does not mean that the district is not considering another secondary school in the western district - and that one does not become active there oneself.

Gilching / Starnberg

- It remains to be seen whether Gilching will get a secondary school - even if the Herrsching secondary school, currently the only one in the western district of Starnberg, has a high proportion of Gilching students. In the update of the school development plan for the district, the question of a further secondary school was investigated, and the figures actually show that a secondary school in Gilching would be necessary if there was a large influx, just not immediately. That is why the district council voted to wait four to five years and a new high school in Herrsching until a decision is made. The SPD wanted something different.

The idea of giving the third-largest district municipality of Gilching a secondary school has not only existed since a petition in 2019. Manfred Walter, Mayor of Gilching and chairman of the special purpose association for secondary schools in the western district, wanted a formal resolution from the district council that the results of the report (school development planning) are recognized - and according to Walter, this provides enough students for a three-tier secondary school in Gilching as early as 2023 , namely around 560 (with a minimum size of 450).

Therefore, he applied for the SPD in the district council that the district should at least in principle recognize the need for a secondary school in Gilching.

Walter is thinking of a branch of the largest secondary school in the district with 1,000 students, the one in Herrsching.

It is already being visited by many people from Gilching.

Walter wanted a political confirmation in order to make possible any vacancies in the Gilching grammar school (if Herrschinger runs after 2024).

"In the preliminary stage of the need": District administrator not enthusiastic about the SPD idea

Walter expects that up to a third of the students at the Christoph-Probst-Gymnasium will move to Herrsching, probably around 400. This would certainly free rooms that could be used for the branch office, which in turn could go to secondary school students from Gilching and the neighborhood . He definitely does not want to build a new school, especially since the Zweckverband does not have any property, and it does not have to be an independent secondary school.

District Administrator Stefan Frey was not enthusiastic about it.

One is “in the preliminary stage of the need”, he thinks, and wants to wait four or five years.

The school and district committee had recommended it.

The figures are also not so clear, since there are more migrations between school types with a grammar school - no one is able to calculate exactly what they look like at the moment.

That is why the SPD initiative comes "a tick too early".

At the moment there are scenarios that result in different numbers of pupils for strong hikes or less strong ones.

The crux of the matter is: Nobody knows how the new Herrsching grammar school will affect the choice of school for parents and children.

That's how many students learned in the district in 2020

Frey received support from the other parliamentary groups. Martina Neubauer (Greens) also referred to the middle schools, the number of pupils of which could then also change. Albert Luppart (Free Voters) also found student movements to be closely monitored. Harald Schwab (CSU), himself Gilchinger, indirectly accused Walter of a bit of populism, because there are statements from the Gilchinger Gymnasium that no rooms would be empty there - and such a decision alone could have far-reaching effects. Wilhelm Boneberger (FDP), also Gilchinger, saw it similarly. SPD parliamentary group leader Tim Weidner, on the other hand, warned that a Gilching secondary school should not fall under the table. "The numbers don't give that."

The figures indicate that in 2020 there were 2499 secondary school students in Herrsching (1003), Gauting (986) and Tutzing (510) in the district. The experts from the planning association for the outer economic area and a specialist office who compiled the school development plan assume that the number of secondary school students will rise by two to three percent by 2034, if only because of immigration. If there were a secondary school in Gilching, the one in Herrsching would be around 40 percent smaller.

For Walter, who is also the school sponsor there with the Zweckverband, that would be no problem: The Herrschinger Realschule is at the limit with the current 1000 students, and an increase of around 140 is to be expected by 2030 - then the Herrschinger School would definitely be too small .

It is not certain whether this increase will actually occur, proponents of waiting oppose it - perhaps so many children go to the new grammar school that the increase in the secondary school does not occur or is smaller.

But the truth is that the secondary school in Gauting is also pretty full.

District Administrator Frey tried to take the pressure off.

He promised that Gilching's request would not be forgotten.

Since the district council rejected the SPD application against five votes, a secondary school in Gilching is currently not an issue for the district.

But for Manfred Walter: In the autumn, when more precise data is available, he will talk to the Zweckverband about the report and the figures - and “propose resolutions”, as he says. But it will not work entirely without the district. After the meeting, Walter was disappointed that Gilching district councilors from other parties voted against his proposal that a secondary school could be found in their party programs.
