In the cold, wind and all the unpredictable showers, sitting outside is uncomfortable for the guests and the business cannot be planned for the innkeepers.
"May is currently too cold in Bavaria," confirms Guido Wolz from the German Weather Service in Munich.
The reason for this is a pronounced westerly current, according to the qualified meteorologist.
"This air comes from very high latitudes and stayed for a long time over the Atlantic and Iceland," explains his colleague Martin Schwirnbacher.

According to the expert, several factors are to blame for the dreary, changeable weather conditions: The low that comes from the west only warms up very slowly on its way to continental Europe. The floors are still quite cool because they have received little sun in the previous weeks. "At a height of around five kilometers, bubble-like upheavals occur again and again within its layers - and these are then expressed as precipitation," explains Schwirnbacher.
And even if the thought suggests itself, neither Pankratius nor Servatius, Bonifatius or Cold Sophie are responsible for the summer postponement: “The ice saints cannot do anything about it. We no longer expect night frost, but just low temperatures, ”says Schwirnbacher. And little will change about that until Whit Monday. It remains changeable over the weekend. But that's not unusual, emphasize the two weather experts.
“The spring months of the last few years have spoiled us a bit.
They were exceptionally warm and that quickly manifests itself in people's heads, ”says Wolz.
And indeed, memories of March and April of last year are still omnipresent, as many were already working in the garden and the fruit trees used to be in full bloom.
The beer gardens were also closed at that time due to the nationwide lockdown.

"It is only from Whit Monday that there will be signs of a turnaround," says Schwirnbacher's current forecast. "Then the air becomes milder, the temperatures rise and the sun shines at least in southern Bavaria." The weather expert then expects up to 20 degrees at the edge of the Alps. Neither Wolz nor Schwirnbacher want to venture a forecast for the summer. But one thing is already certain: Bavaria is not immune to the so-called sheep cold in mid-June, despite the rainy and cool low Lothar.
