Rocket strikes, bombing and artillery fire: Israel's military and radical Palestinians continue their attacks - despite international calls for a ceasefire.

The current fights between the conflicting parties are the hardest in years.

Both sides mourn the dead and injured, including many civilians and children.

How could it possibly come this far?

8th of May

In front of the al-Aqsa mosque on the Temple Mount, believers attack the security forces with stones.

The police fire at the attackers with rubber bullets and stun grenades.

It is the worst clashes between Palestinians and the Israeli police in East Jerusalem in years.

More than 180 people are injured.

Background: Growing tensions in the areas occupied by Israel.

Around 30 people are threatened with eviction from their homes, in favor of Israeli settlers.

This is seen by Palestinians as an attempt to drive them out of Jerusalem.

10th of May

As every year, Israel celebrates the annexation of East Jerusalem in the course of the Six Day War in 1967 on May 10th. For fear of violence, the Israeli police have forbidden Jews to visit the Temple Mount in East Jerusalem when flag marches through the Old City.

Numerous Jewish believers ignore this. The result: serious excesses.

The Palestinians see East Jerusalem as the capital of a future state of their own.

Hamas and Islamic Jihad fire rockets at Israel.

12th of May

The Israeli military counted more than 1,000 rockets in two days.

Many of the projectiles can be intercepted by the "Iron Dome" anti-missile defense system, and some hit residential areas.

In retaliation, the Israeli Air Force flies the heaviest attacks since the Gaza war in 2014. It bombs facilities and the tunnel system of Hamas and other militant groups in the Gaza Strip in hundreds of missions.

Benjamin Netanyahu / Prime Minister Israel

»Hamas and Islamic Jihad have paid and I tell you they will pay a very high price for their warmongering.

And here, tonight, I say, they will atone with their blood. "

May 18

Radical Islamic groups are still firing rockets and mortar shells from the Gaza Strip at Israel.

Federal Foreign Minister Heiko Maas calls on Hamas to end the violence and sees the EU as an obligation - politically and humanitarian:

Heiko Maas / Federal Foreign Minister

»We are making around 40 million euros available for the civilian population in the Gaza Strip.

We speak intensively with our Israeli friends and we speak with those who have direct contact with Hamas.

This applies in particular to our colleagues from Cairo.

And that's why what we're all about at the moment is to create the basis for the guns to be silent for the time being. "

The Israeli military continues to launch attacks on targets in the densely populated Palestinian territories. Israel’s Prime Minister Netanyahu now sees Hamas weakened. He wanted to "keep going until there was calm." It doesn't look like that: two Thais were killed in a rocket attack by militant Palestinians on Israeli towns. They were in a house on the border with the Gaza Strip.
