Premiere in Althegnenberg: For the first time the Bavarian Red Cross (BRK) called for blood donations - “a complete success”, as council member Benedikt Wex proudly announced.

He'd got the whole thing off the ground a few weeks ago.

Two more dates will follow.

Althegnenberg - There is a lot going on in the gym on the day of the action. But there are actually no queues. Due to the corona pandemic, everyone who wanted to donate had to register online beforehand and was assigned an appointment. But of course you can also come spontaneously and ask whether there is still an appointment free by chance. Before the start of the campaign, there were only a few appointments. Most donors also come by appointment. At the end of the day there should be 131, including 39 first-time donors.

Those willing to donate enter the location through the door next to the forest restaurant.

A BRK employee is already waiting there with the list of names and disinfectants for the hands.

Then it goes towards the gym and registration.

Then the questionnaire is filled out, at the next station the finger prick follows to determine the iron level in the blood.

If it is too low, the donor has to go again.

This is followed by a consultation with a doctor with temperature and blood pressure measurements.

Whoever is called is then assigned a lounger and then off we go.

Never too much

“Amazingly, the willingness to donate blood has increased during the pandemic,” said Anja Mimh from the BRK district association.

Some places that used to have few people willing to donate have even doubled their blood reserves.

“But there is never too much blood,” emphasizes Mimh.

Almost 2000 canned food are needed in Bavaria alone every day.

Mimh's BRK colleague Michaela Selzer also says that you can now make an appointment online beforehand.

“It works well and there are hardly any waiting times.” She is pleased that so many donors come from Althegnenberg in particular.

Small refreshment

Mayor Rainer Spicker and council member Benedikt Wex are among the first.

Both are not first-time donors.

After the procedure is over, both are briefly in the so-called superstructure of the gym for observation.

There are refreshments and thank you packets for the donors.

Otherwise the municipal council meetings take place here.

But the new blood donation date in Althegnenberg has not only attracted locals.

Theresa Ungerer came from Groebenzell.

“I'm on vacation right now and the appointment was perfect.

I haven't donated for a long time, but I think it's all the more important now. ”With the online registration, it worked really well.

“It's really well organized,” she says.

After just under 25 minutes, it was finished.

Gerhard Engelmann came from Tegernbach. He has already donated blood over 30 times. “I'm usually in Mammendorf, but that didn't work this time,” he says. "It was excellently organized here."
