Tears of strangers say goodbye to the last dead in Ceuta

Since an unprecedented border crisis broke out Monday with the entry of some 9,000 people, three people have died.

The last two victims of the border crisis in Ceuta have been resting since Sunday under the soil of the city's Muslim cemetery.

They were buried by two undertakers and two funeral home workers with the help of a soldier who was passing by.

They had half a minute of silent prayer before them, with the right hand hugging the left wrist on the stomach.

They died alone and were buried in a nameless grave, but these strangers mourned their misfortune as if it were their own.

"They are our brothers, it makes me very sad," lamented after the response one of the two Moroccan imams who fired them.

Minutes earlier, in the corpse preparation room of the old Muslim cemetery, a local photographer captured the scene, unable to even look through the lens.

She covered her eyes filled with tears, while her glasses clouded over.

"There are dozens, I see this every day," he sighed.

One of the two imams's voice broke while reciting the Quran and Dris Ahmed, the funeral home employee who was witnessing the scene, had two tears dropped.

“It's a shame what is happening.

They have not had anyone to watch over them ”, he lamented.

Since an unprecedented border crisis broke out last Monday with the rampant entry of some 9,000 people, three people have died and one has tried to hang himself.

The first was a 19-year-old named Sabir.

He drowned last Monday when he tried to reach the Tarajal beach in search of the sustenance that the pandemic took from him.

He went with his friends from Fnideq (Castillejos), but he could not step on the Ceuta sand.

His story was told by

El Faro de Ceuta

after speaking with a devastated father who could not cross the border to say goodbye.

They buried him on Friday.

One of the bodies buried this Sunday is that of a young man who was found floating on the Tarajal beach on Thursday while a journalist went live on a television program.

The coroner has warned that he may be a minor, one of the thousands who these days left their homes to jump into the sea.

No more is known about him, no one has claimed his body.

The other victim is a man who rushed from a ten-meter wall in the city's port on Saturday, the place that attracts dozens of Moroccans seeking to hide on a ship that will take them to Europe. He was transferred to the hospital, but did not survive the coup. The funeral home now follows the only clue with which they may be able to identify him, the photocopy of an identity document that a cousin has sent from across the border.

"What hurts the most is not knowing who they are," says Ahmed, who after five years burying people does not get used to it and often suffers at funerals.

"I do not have words to describe it.

They are truncated dreams and to see them truncated in this way ... [I think] of his family suffering, without knowing how or when his children died ... ”.

The funeral home usually records the ritual so that if one day they locate the relatives at least they will have the consolation that they were buried by the Islamic rite in a Muslim cemetery.

The Criminalistics Laboratory of the Judicial Police of the Civil Guard has already taken the fingerprints of the corpses that must reach Rabat through Interpol with the aim that one day they can be officially identified.

Until then, it will be tombstones 4371 and 4372, the last victims of the border.
