Control of the presidency of the PP in Madrid, vacant since the resignation of Cristina Cifuentes, in 2018, has triggered the tension in the party.

After their victory in the 4-M elections, Isabel Díaz Ayuso's team believes that the position should be theirs.

She is the undisputed favorite, and she will hardly have weight rivals, admits a popular leader with stripes.

However, the mayor of the capital, José Luis Martínez Almeida, defends that whoever leads the party must work on it full time and not have institutional responsibilities.

That the national president, Pablo Casado, and his number two, Teodoro García-Egea, have not positioned themselves in public, arguing that they must be neutral, has contributed to fueling internal suspicions.

"Dear Mayor Almeida, I think you are wrong," Juan Soler, former senator, former mayor of Getafe and elected deputy for the next legislature in the Madrid Assembly, writes this Sunday on his social networks. "Isabel Díaz Ayuso should and will be the President of the PP of Madrid," he adds after reading a new statement from the mayor in favor of a bicephaly that avoids concentrating organic and institutional power in the same person. “I know hundreds of affiliates who would not understand another harassment. The polls spoke and the militants will speak ”, he concludes on the primaries that will decide the presidency.

The message is an open door to the inner life of the conservative formation. First, because it clearly shows that there is a sector of the PP that is against trying to open an alternative route to that of Díaz Ayuso in the face of the party's presidency in the Community of Madrid. Second, because it reflects that

Ayusismo is

beginning to become an internal current in the PP, just as

Aguirrismo

was before

. And third, because it teaches in public a concern that until now was private: in the party everyone is attentive to who is going to take the command of the powerful Madrid organization, which is key to deciding the future of training on a national scale, since with Andalusia it is one of the most affiliated.

Not a minor detail in a party that elects its presidents by primaries.

Madrid guarantees power and resources if whoever heads the organization wants to get into that fight.

Dear Mayor Almeida, I think you are wrong.

In the first person or by delegation, I don't know.

Isabel Díaz Ayuso should and will be the President of the PP in Madrid. I know hundreds of affiliates who would not understand otherwise.

The polls spoke and the militants will speak.

"It is not within my plans to opt for the Presidency of the PP of the Community of Madrid at this time," Almeida said a few days ago in an interview on ABC, thus avoiding opening a direct pulse with Díaz Ayuso.

"I stand by the thesis of bicephaly," he added, making it clear that he is betting on a neutral leader.

At least "right now."

Or "in principle", as he detailed himself, opening the door to a hypothetical change of mind in the future.

"At this time we have to talk about the people of Madrid and not about the party.

It is focused on the management of the City Council.

The Congress is not even summoned ”, pointed out this Sunday a source of his confidence.

The question is whether Martínez-Almeida's opinion represents only himself, or also the national leadership, since he is also a spokesperson for the formation, and his number three. Before the 4-M elections, in which Díaz Ayuso won 65 deputies, Casado's team wondered about the possibility of promoting a candidate for the party's presidency that was neither she nor the mayor.

The recent history of training played in favor of this thesis.

When Esperanza Aguirre joined the regional presidency and that of the PP in Madrid, she became an internal counterpower that made Mariano Rajoy's day-to-day life difficult, and threatened to dispute his leadership.

In parallel, the past and present work of Pío García-Escudero at the head of the organization is appreciated by all who see advantages in having a politician focused solely on the party.

And that is why the national leadership has been directing its gaze to the same person for months: Ana Camins, the general secretary in the region, who is highly trusted by the national president, Pablo Casado.

But then the 4-M arrived.

And the victory of Díaz Ayuso.

And everything changed.

"The natural thing is that Díaz Ayuso is placed at the head of the organization, he falls under his own weight," point out sources of the trust of the acting president.

"It would not be understood otherwise."

"And who would want to stand in front of that bull?" Asks a popular source about the interest that Camins, or any other popular leader, may have in challenging Díaz Ayuso for the presidency, the fashionable politics on the right, when they are the affiliates who will decide the outcome.

"The PP in Madrid is my home," she recalled as soon as she celebrated her electoral victory.

“I was born politically into it.

I have traveled practically the entire Community, all the venues, because I always worked from the base, "he added.

"Obviously, one does not deny his home."

In favor of Diaz Ayuso, not only does the result of the elections play, or that the national leadership does not see an alternative.

So do comparisons.

Alberto Núñez-Feijoó, the president of Galicia, also has the helm of the party in his Community.

The same happens with Juan Manuel Moreno Bonilla in Andalusia, with Alfonso Fernández Mañueco in Castilla y León, and with Fernando López Miras in Murcia.

"Why would Madrid be an exception if Díaz Ayuso wants to take the step?" His supporters wonder.

Thus, the national leadership of the PP has dedicated itself to proclaiming its neutrality in public, while privately transmitting that Casado understands that Díaz Ayuso should be the president.

Meanwhile, internal peace is sought by distancing the congress that must decide the presidency as far as possible in time.

There is no date for the primaries.

The PP limits itself to saying that the provincial congresses must end first, despite the fact that the Madrid organization has had an interim leadership for three years now: those that have passed since Rajoy had to fill the gap left by the resignation with García-Escudero de Cifuentes as a result of the master case and the publication of a video in which he appeared starring, supposedly, in the alleged theft of creams in a supermarket.
