There has been a ceasefire between Israel and Palestine since the end of last week.

In the midst of the tense situation, two young Israelis were stabbed to death in Jerusalem on Monday.

The two had stab wounds in the upper body, said a spokesman for the Israeli rescue service Magen David Adom on Monday.

The men, aged 21 and 23, were moderately injured and were conscious, said a spokeswoman for Hadassah Hospital.

According to the army, one of the two is a soldier.

Police said the attacker shot the attacker after the crime.

She did not provide any information on the identity of the perpetrator, who was armed with a knife.

Tense truce

The attack occurred near a tram stop near the Sheikh Jarrah neighborhood in Israel-annexed East Jerusalem.

The Palestinians consider East Jerusalem their capital.

However, Israel annexed East Jerusalem and regards the entire city as its capital.

The trigger of the current conflict is the planned evacuation of several apartments in the eastern part of the city.

Some of them have been inhabited by Palestinians for decades, but are now claimed by Jews.

After eleven days of violent rocket attacks between Israel and the radical Islamic Hamas as well as violence in Jerusalem, among other places, a cease-fire came into effect on Friday night.

Since then there has been a tense calm.

On Friday, however, there were clashes between Palestinians and the Israeli police on Jerusalem's Temple Mount.

According to Palestinian rescue workers, 15 people were treated after police used rubber bullets, among other things.

After his commitment to a ceasefire, US President Joe Biden sends Secretary of State Antony Blinken to the crisis region in the Middle East.

Blinken wrote on Twitter on Monday that at Biden's request he would travel to Jerusalem, Ramallah, Cairo and Amman.

He wanted to support all parties involved in consolidating the ceasefire.

According to the US State Department, the trip is scheduled from Monday to Thursday of this week.

Blinken will meet, among others, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, Palestinian President Mahmud Abbas, the Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi and Jordan's King Abdullah II.
