The drug cartel suspected that cocaine was dyed black in an attempt to pretend to be acai berry meal. The result was self-defeating.

The customs inspected an air parcel from Brazil to Hong Kong at the airport last Thursday (20th). It was reported as 10 pieces of healthy food acai powder. However, because the powder was black instead of dark purple, the officers were suspicious and inspected it further. It was found that it was suspected of cocaine, weighing about 5 kilograms and worth about 7.2 million yuan. After investigation, a 20-year-old man responsible for the collection was arrested yesterday and charged with one count of trafficking in dangerous drugs.

In addition, on the same day, at the inspection site of the Kwai Chung Customs Building, the Customs found about 5 million worth of suspected methamphetamine in a box of cargo reported as oil paintings. Two men who received the goods were arrested today.

Lin Zelin, senior investigation director of the Airport Investigation Division of the Customs Drug Investigation Bureau, said that last Thursday, customs officers inspected an air parcel from Brazil to Hong Kong at Chek Lap Kok Airport and found a batch of suspected cocaine contained in 10 bags of healthy food. It weighs about 5 kilograms and is worth about 7.2 million yuan.

After following up the investigation, Customs yesterday arrested a 20-year-old man suspected of being involved in the case in Tsuen Wan. It is believed that he was responsible for collecting the postal parcel, which was then handed over to a drug cartel for distribution.

The arrested man was charged today with one count of trafficking in dangerous drugs and will appear in West Kowloon Magistracy tomorrow.

It is understood that the postal packet was reported as acai powder, but because the powder was black instead of the deep purple of the general acai powder, the staff was suspicious and further examined it. The result was found to be suspected of cocaine.

It is believed that drug cartels are mixed with fish, and dyeing cocaine black is relatively rare.

Two consignees arrested for oil painting parcel hidden in ice

In addition, on the same day last Thursday, through risk assessment and recent trends, customs officers picked and inspected a box of seaborne goods arriving from Thailand at the inspection site of the Kwai Chung Customs Building. They reported that they contained oil paintings and found a batch of suspected methamphetamine collections. Inside the five oil paintings, they weigh about 9 kilograms and are worth about 5 million yuan in total.

Following the investigation, two men, aged 37 and 34, who were suspected of being responsible for receiving the goods, were arrested in Kam Tin today.

The case is still under investigation.

Lin Zelin pointed out that a total of 3 men responsible for receiving goods were arrested in 2 cases, and they all knew that the parcels they received contained contraband.

The Customs urges the public to be vigilant and refrain from participating in drug trafficking activities for money gains, refrain from accepting any person's employment or entrustment to transport controlled goods in and out of Hong Kong, and refrain from rashly assisting others in transporting goods without determining the properties of the goods.

In addition, the public should also avoid passing personal data or addresses to others for the purpose of receiving parcels or goods.

According to the Dangerous Drugs Ordinance, trafficking in dangerous drugs is a serious crime. Once convicted, the maximum penalty is a fine of 5 million yuan and life imprisonment.

The public can call the Customs 24-hour hotline 2545 6182, or use the dedicated email account for crime reporting (crimereport@customs.gov.hk) to report suspected drug trafficking activities.
