Manuel Valls: "France needs New Caledonia"

INTERVIEW - The independence of the territory would be "a dangerous leap into the void", according to the former prime minister.

Prime Minister from 2014 to 2016, Manuel Valls prepared in Matignon the referendum process of New Caledonia.

He expresses his attachment to the archipelago in a chapter of his latest work,

Pas une gout de sang français

(Grasset, 2021).

- Would you say, like the Head of State in 2018, that

“France would be less beautiful without New Caledonia”

VALLS Manual.

As a former Prime Minister and as a French patriot, I adopt this beautiful formula.

France needs New Caledonia.

I love this extraordinary territory with a tormented history, one of the world's leading nickel producers, which allows us to be the last European Union country present in the Pacific since Brexit.

New Caledonia, for its part, needs France in the face of China's appetites in this region of the world.

I hope that it will remain French in a form that will have to be reinvented, but it is obviously the Caledonian citizens who will decide.
