Sonia Backès, the leader of the pro-France
Leader of the loyalists, close to the Republicans, Sonia Backès presides over the most populous and richest province of New Caledonia: the South Province, the last leading institution in the hands of non-independence activists.
This 45-year-old computer engineer has been working her political ascent since her first election to Congress, the archipelago's legislative body, in 2009. Her loyalist coalition of traditional right-wing parties, The Confident Future, has come to dominate the moderate right of his rival Philippe Gomès in the 2019 provincial elections, the most important local ballot.
