Second S-Bahn main line in Munich: Thick rescheduling is in the room

There is no shortage of visions: the Bavarian Ministry of Transport has published a list of 43 projects aimed at improving the rail network in the greater Munich area.

A major rescheduling is on the agenda for the second trunk line.

Munich - The second main S-Bahn * route is planning to be rescheduled - once again! The Bavarian Ministry of Transport is examining whether the tunnel should have an underground branch to the south (Giesing) in order to directly connect the S3 to Holzkirchen and the S7 to Kreuzstrasse. If this were to happen, these lines could swivel directly onto the main line (instead of changing the direction of travel as in the previous plans at Ostbahnhof, so that the train driver has to go from front to back).

This possible re-planning of the trunk line is one of 43 measures for the rail network in the greater Munich area * that are being examined "for their impact on traffic and their structural feasibility".

The list has now been presented in the specialist journal Eisenbahntechnische Rundschau by four authors - including Frank Kutzner, head of the -S-Bahn / Bahnausbau department in the Ministry of Transport.

In addition to the construction of new train stations (for example on the Menterschwaige), the expansion of single-track lines to include a second track and the construction of new lines that have not yet existed are examined.

S-Bahn Munich: A south branch for the second trunk line?

The south branch would be one of the most extensive additions. The diversion has been considered repeatedly in recent years, but ultimately discarded for reasons of cost. Because the building permit is still missing for the tunnel in the east, at least no new plan approval procedure would be necessary for the addition. Nevertheless, this change would probably delay the construction further. The current plans envisage completion of the second main line in 2028, but experts already believe that 2032 will be more realistic - without re-planning. From a structural point of view, the southern junction would be a challenge, says the former tunnel critic Martin Runge (Greens): "The Giesinger branch would have to cross or undercut the new trunk line underground."

A whole series of rescheduling was necessary for the mega-structure.

Among other things, the new train stop at the Ostbahnhof is now to be built on the east side, not at Orleansplatz as previously planned.

In addition, the railway now has to plan a rescue tube.

Construction of the second trunk line began over four years ago, and the project is expected to cost over three billion euros - not including the rescheduling.

The new development is also due to Bavaria's Transport Minister Kerstin Schreyer (CSU), who has her constituency in the Munich district and repeatedly pushed for improvements to the S7 in the east.

The aim is to shorten the cycle times of the S-Bahn from 20 to 15 minutes

Guys, finally build!

Per lane

Other plans sound utopian. For example, the authors propose a S-Bahn line Munich – Odelzhausen – Dasing parallel to the Stuttgart A 8 motorway, the feasibility of which even the railway fans of Pro Bahn can hardly imagine. Experts also joke about a railway ring around Munich - it doesn't even exist as a motorway. In contrast, there is no prospect of expansion for the Werdenfelsbahn south of Weilheim, for example. Just recently, so the Weilheimer Norbert Moy of Pro Bahn complains, the municipality of Wielenbach has received a rejection for its demand for the reopening of the Wilzhofen station. Other things are so taken for granted that one wonders why it has to be re-examined - for example the two-track expansion Grafing-Ebersberg. Pro Bahn's advice: "Guys, finally build it!"

Main S-Bahn line in Munich: Further projects

The list of the 43 new possible expansion projects that the Bavarian Ministry of Transport is now investigating through specialist offices also includes the following projects:

  • - New train stops / S-Bahn stations: The authors specifically name Emmering (Fürstenfeldbruck district), Berduxstraße, Weichselbaum, Menterschwaige (as a link with Tram 25), Oberlainders (Miesbach district), Föching (south of Kreuzstraße), Mintraching, the Parkzentrum West (at the airport as a connection to the Lab Campus), Eching-Ost and a stop between Trudering and Gronsdorf, which cannot yet be precisely determined.

    - Extension of all platforms in the -S area to 210 meters (for three S-Bahn trains).

    - Expansion of the Südring: "In order to improve the transfer connections to the U-Bahn, S-Bahn traffic on the Südring should also be considered." So far, the Ministry had strictly rejected S-Bahn stops on the Südring!

    - Two-track expansion of various S-Bahn lines, such as the S 7 Giesing-Kreuzstraße, the S 7 Höllriegelskreuth-Wolfratshausen and the S 2 Markt Schwaben-Altenerding.

    - New lines on the Riem-Messe-Aschheim-Kirchheim-Pliening line, between Altomünster and Aichach and between Munich, Odelzhausen and Dasing.

Also under consideration: a S-Bahn branch from the S 3 to a new development area on the site of the abandoned Fürstenfeldbruck air base.

    - Electrification of the line between Kaufering and Landsberg.

A total of 43 new possible expansion projects are now being examined.
