The condition of five-year-old Eitan Biran, who survived the cable car disaster in northern Italy in which his entire family was killed, continues to be critical, but he is starting to show the first signs of wakefulness, one of his doctors said today (Tuesday) in Turin hospital.

"We started the process to wake him up, the child's reaction was positive," the doctor said.

Meanwhile, El Al has announced that it will return the coffins of the five family members killed in the disaster, using a special flight departing from Milan.

The flight is expected to land in Israel tomorrow, at 18:45.

The dead are the couple Amit and Tal Biran and their two-year-old son Tom, residents of Fabia in the country, and Yitzhak and Barbara Cohen, Tal's grandparents, residents of Tel Aviv who came to visit them.

Nine more Italians perished as the caravan sank about 20 meters a short distance from the summit of Mount Matrona in the Alps.

Next to Eitan in the hospital is his aunt Aya, Amit's sister, a doctor who has lived in Italy for many years.

According to media reports in Italy, doctors are expressing cautious optimism about his brain condition, and according to an MRI scan it appears that he was not harmed.

In Italy, an investigation is underway into the disaster and authorities are trying to understand why the car's emergency brake did not work.

At the same time, Pope Francis said he was sending his condolences to the families of the dead and "praying for little Ethan."
